Its lower half is a nearly spherical body, broad and seemingly heavy, resting without any clearly visible flat base. From its top rises a long, narrow, cylindrical neck that suddenly widens into a flaring, trumpet-like mouth. On the right, a thick, flattened handle joins the neck to the shoulder of the body, leaving a dark oval opening between the two. The surface is dark ceramic, ranging from charcoal gray and grayish brown to dull black, covered with pale patches, scratches, and small worn areas that reveal its age. There is no figural painting; the decoration is in relief. A thin vertical band runs down the front of the body, another crosses the shoulder, and on the right there is a raised circle, also in relief. Near the junction of neck and mouth, a fine ring encircles the neck. Soft, diffuse light from the left models the rounded volume, lightens the left edge, and casts a short shadow to the right. The texture looks rough, earthy, and porous, in contrast to the clean neutrality of the background.","contexto":"According to its source, the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a jug by an unknown maker, dated to about 1600–1450 BCE and attributed to Cyprus in the Late Cypriot I period. It was made in the technique known as base-ring ware, a ceramic characteristic of Late Bronze Age Cyprus, recognizable by its fine fabric, dark burnished surface, and decoration in relief. Wares of this kind circulated widely around the eastern Mediterranean. We do not know who made it, where it was found, or exactly what liquid it held; it probably served for pouring or storing. It came to the museum as a gift of the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust.","como_mirarla":"Start with the contrast between the heavy, round body and the tall, narrow neck topped by a wide mouth. Then follow the raised band down the front and look for the circle in relief on the shoulder. Those plain lines, rather than any painted scene, are the decoration—and they also make the worn, mottled surface easier to read.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual detail: there is no painted ornament at all. All of the decoration is made by thin strips and a circle of clay raised above the surface, so it would have been felt by the fingers as much as seen by the eye.","preguntas":["How does the relationship between a large body and a narrow neck change the way you imagine this jug being held and used?","What can decoration made only of raised lines and one circle communicate, without images or writing?","What do the wear, stains, and scratches add to—or take away from—how we read an object more than three thousand years old?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Jarra — Cleveland Museum of Art","se_ve":"En el centro de un fondo liso, gris muy claro, se alza una jarra antigua fotografiada de frente, ligeramente de lado. I pause on what time has written on the surface.
