The vessel has a broad, shallow bowl that tapers to a short stem and a flared foot. Its surface is matte and weathered, in a creamy beige tone with patches of wear and small chips revealing the orange clay beneath, especially along the rim and on the foot. The decoration, painted in dark brown-black, is strictly geometric. Below the rim run several thin parallel horizontal bands encircling the bowl; the main frieze shows two vertical panels made of dense fine lines, and between them a central motif of stacked chevrons forming an upward-pointing arrow or stylized tree, ending in a small solid triangle at the bottom. The stem and foot also bear dark bands. Soft directional lighting models the volume, emphasizes the porous, slightly grainy texture of the pottery, and casts a crisp shadow beneath the base, conveying modest scale and age.","contexto":"According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a Footed Bowl by an unknown maker, dated circa 850–750 BCE, from Cyprus in the Cypro-Geometric III phase. It is made in white painted ware, a technique characteristic of Cypriot ceramic production in the Early Iron Age. This period, following the Bronze Age, reflects continuity of local Aegean and Levantine traditions, with abstract geometric decoration preceding the later rise of figural motifs. The exact findspot and original use are not recorded, but such vessels were likely used in domestic, funerary, or votive contexts. The bowl belongs to the Greek and Roman Art collection.","como_mirarla":"First take in the overall symmetry of bowl and pedestal, then follow the horizontal bands near the rim. Pause on the central chevron motif between the two hatched panels: its hand-painted, slightly irregular strokes reveal the painter's gesture and soften the otherwise strict geometry.","dato_curioso":"White painted ware is defined by dark pigment painted over a pale slip, and in Cyprus it lasted for centuries with evolving patterns; the combination of parallel lines and stacked chevrons is diagnostic of the Cypro-Geometric period.","preguntas":["What does the pairing of a simple utilitarian shape with highly ordered decoration suggest to you?","How does noticing the chips, fading, and uneven brushwork change your reading of the object?","What function do you imagine for a bowl with such a high foot and tiny handles: drinking, offering, or display?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Cuenco con pie de Chipre, periodo Chipro-Geométrico III","se_ve":"En el centro, perfectamente iluminado sobre fondo gris neutro, reposa un cuenco cerámico con pie alto y dos asas pequeñas y horizontales a los lados. From my workbench I first notice the matte cream-beige surface, with small chips revealing the orange clay underneath.
