The blade itself is nowhere to be seen. What fills the frame is dense, dark gold ornament: the waisted grip, slightly narrower in the middle and capped by a rounded, almost squared pommel, is covered in fine openwork filigree of scrolling vines and tiny figures or motifs, shadowed black in the recesses so the gilded metal reads almost like lace. A ridged, ringed collar separates grip from scabbard. Below it, a broad banded throat carries more patterned registers before the long scabbard tapers gently downward. Down its centre runs a vertical line of small turquoise-blue insets, like beads of colour spaced along the dark ground, guiding the eye to the rounded end, which finishes in curling volutes and a circular medallion. The metal looks worn and matte rather than polished, with soft highlights and little shadow on the backdrop. The whole object feels less like a tool laid out for inspection than a piece of jewellery photographed upright, symmetrical, still, and self-contained.","contexto":"Dated to about 1750 and attributed to Northeast India, this dagger is listed by the Cleveland Museum of Art as brass with a gilt grip, a gift of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Wade. Its maker is unknown. In 18th-century South Asia, finely worked daggers could serve as weapons, status symbols, and ceremonial dress items at once; which role this example played is not documented. Because the blade is sheathed, its material and condition cannot be judged from this view.","como_mirarla":"First note that the blade is hidden. Then follow the tiny turquoise points down the scabbard: they turn a weapon into an ornament.","dato_curioso":"The most surprising thing is structural: the part meant for cutting is completely invisible, while all the visible labour — filigree, gilding, stones — goes into covering and holding it.","preguntas":["Where does a weapon end and an ornament begin when the blade is never shown?","What might the turquoise insets and filigree have signalled about the person who carried this?","How does photographing a dagger upright and sheathed change how dangerous it feels?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Violencia como objeto: una daga hecha para ser mirada, con la hoja fuera de la vista.","se_ve":"Una sola daga enfundada aparece perfectamente vertical en el centro de un fondo liso, gris blanquecino, con el pomo arriba y la punta redondeada de la vaina abajo.
