She occupies the right and center of the composition, her body slightly turned toward him and her head bowed. Her face is pale and oval, with lowered eyelids, a straight nose and a small, closed mouth. Blond hair is gathered beneath a sheer, finely edged veil and a halo suggested by tiny dots. She wears a salmon-pink dress with many vertical pleats and delicate trim at the neckline, covered by a deep green-blue mantle with broad golden borders. One hand supports the Child from behind while the other, long and slender, holds his foot. The baby has fine blond hair, a round belly, dimpled limbs and bare feet; he sits on a white cushion with openwork lace and a dark tassel visible at the lower left. He looks out at the viewer with one finger in his mouth and the other hand clenched. Behind them stretches a blue-gray landscape with water, a small boat, trees, pale buildings and steep brown and green mountains. The light is soft and even, the tempera surface smooth and slightly aged, with fine cracks and restrained, delicate modeling.","contexto":"Madonna and Child, dated to about 1475–80, is a tempera painting on poplar panel by the Florentine painter Francesco Botticini (c. 1446–1497). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Botticini came from a family of painters: his father, Giovanni di Domenico, and his son, Raffaello, also practiced the trade. Little is known of his life or career; he is believed to have apprenticed under Neri di Bicci, and his earliest dated altarpiece, from 1471, is now in the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris. Images of the Virgin with the Christ Child were probably intended for devotion, although the original destination of this particular panel is not known.","como_mirarla":"Begin with the contrast between the Virgin's downcast gaze and the Child's direct look toward the viewer. Then notice the everyday gesture of his finger in his mouth, which shifts the sacred scene toward an intimate, maternal moment. Finally, move past the figures into the tiny landscape, where a boat, trees and abrupt mountains open a distant world behind them.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual detail: despite the dotted halo and the sacred subject, the Child is absorbed in sucking one finger, a completely ordinary gesture that makes him look first like a real baby and only then like a holy figure.","preguntas":["How does the Child's everyday gesture change the way we perceive a sacred image?","What relationship is established between the Virgin, who looks downward, and the Child, who looks directly at us?","Why might a Renaissance painter place such an intimate scene before a vast, distant landscape?"]},"es":{"titulo":"La intimidad dentro de lo sagrado: una madre, un niño y un mundo lejano","se_ve":"En una tabla vertical aparece la Virgen de medio cuerpo sosteniendo al Niño Jesús desnudo, sentado en la parte inferior izquierda. If you look closely you will see what moves me most: the smooth surface of tempera on poplar panel, now with fine craquelure from age.
