The coin is roughly circular but irregular, with a thick, uneven rim, small nicks, darkened patches, and fine scratches across its surface. Its metal ranges from bright, almost mirror-like silver where light catches the relief to matte gray and near-black in the recesses. In profile facing left, occupying most of the field, is the head of a woman in high relief: a straight nose, closed lips, a firm chin, and one almond-shaped eye beneath a calm brow. She wears a large helmet pushed up and back, its smooth rounded bowl dominating the upper right, with a raised element near the top. Beneath the helmet's edge hang an elaborate earring and curling locks, and around her neck and shoulder appear wavy, snake-like forms and a line of small beads. Behind her, at lower right, emerges a much smaller bearded male face, frontal and heavily worn. At the bottom edge are two faint angular marks, possibly letters or symbols, partly lost to wear.","contexto":"According to the source, this is the reverse of a silver stater minted in Corinth, Greece, around 350–338 BCE, by an unknown maker. It is now in the Greek and Roman Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of J. H. Wade. In the Greek world, Athena was the goddess of wisdom and of war conducted with intelligence, recognizable here by her helmet. Corinthian staters were widely circulated trade coins; the other side, not shown in this image, usually carried Pegasus. It is not known who owned this particular coin or exactly where it was used.","como_mirarla":"Start with Athena's eye and follow the line of the nose and the helmet's brim to take in the whole profile. Then look down and to the right: the tiny second face changes the scale of the scene and turns a portrait into a composition with a hidden companion. Finally, examine the edges and scratches to distinguish the original design from the marks left by time.","dato_curioso":"Surprising visual observation: hidden at Athena's shoulder is a second, bearded face, so small and weathered that it is easy to miss on a first look, yet it is rendered with its own forehead, nose, and beard.","preguntas":["What changes in your reading of Athena when you notice the tiny face behind her shoulder?","How does the wear on the metal become part of the image rather than mere damage?","What does it mean to carry a goddess's portrait on an object made to pass from hand to hand?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Státer: cabeza de Atenea (reverso)","se_ve":"Una sola moneda antigua de plata ocupa casi todo el encuadre cuadrado, fotografiada desde arriba sobre un fondo liso, blanco roto y ligeramente granulado. I focus on how light brings out the relief and reveals the metal's history: mirror-like highlights on the top of the helmet and almost black shadows in the recesses where time has settled. It is a tiny silver planet seen from above, against a pale, slightly grainy background like a whitish sky. Athena in profile fills almost the entire field, like a constellation spanning the vault. Her smooth, rounded helmet reminds me of a celestial dome, and the bright and dark areas of the metal look like lunar phases. Behind her, that tiny, worn bearded face is like a faint companion star, almost hidden, that only appears if you observe patiently.","es":"Cuando miro esta moneda pienso en escalas y círculos. Athena is looking to the side as if she is serious and thinking about something important. Her helmet is huge and covers her head, and you can see her little earring and curly locks peeking out below. I like how some parts shine brightly and others are quite dark, as if the coin has lights and shadows. If you look closely, in the back there is another tiny bearded little face that seems hidden and is playing hide and seek.","es":"Parece una moneda gigante en la foto, pero en realidad es chiquita y cabe en mi mano.
