Its outline resembles a teardrop or a pointed oval, wider at the base and rounded into an arch at the top. It is openwork: much of the interior is empty, and the surface is formed by an irregular network of curved stems, spirals, and scrolls that let the background show through numerous organically shaped holes. In the upper half, a heron stands out with a plump body, leaning downward and to the left, its neck curved, legs short, and tail marked with parallel lines. Its plumage is suggested by small incisions and bumps. In the lower part, almost camouflaged among the metal vegetation, a turtle appears seen from above, with an oval shell and short outstretched legs. The whole piece is covered by a blue-green patina, rough and granular, with brighter turquoise areas and small brown patches of corrosion, especially at the lower right. Soft light casts a short shadow beneath the base and highlights the uneven relief, fragile and eroded by time.","contexto":"This bronze ornament, attributed to Korea during the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392) and dated to the 1100s, comes from the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its maker is unknown. According to the museum, metalworking advanced remarkably in the Goryeo period, and sophisticated objects with intricate designs were used both as everyday accessories and as burial goods to commemorate the dead. Traces of fibers found on the backs of ornaments like this one suggest they were probably once used as brooches to fasten garments. It is not known who owned this particular piece, exactly how it was worn, or where it was found.","como_mirarla":"Begin with the outline and the openwork, then look for the heron in the upper half. Move down slowly: the turtle at the bottom almost disappears into the scrolls, and finding it changes the piece from an abstract ornament into a small scene with two animals. Finally, notice the green patina and the brown spots, which show its age.","dato_curioso":"The intense green color is not the bronze's original appearance: it is a patina formed over centuries as the metal reacted with air and moisture.","preguntas":["What might the heron and the turtle together have meant to the person who wore this ornament?","How does the experience of the piece change if we imagine it sewn onto clothing rather than isolated in a museum?","What does the green patina add to, or take away from, our reading of the original design?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Ornamento con diseño de garza y tortuga","se_ve":"En el centro de la fotografía, sobre un fondo liso que pasa del gris oscuro arriba al gris claro abajo, se apoya vertical una pieza pequeña de bronce, fotografiada de frente y ligeramente desde arriba. If you look closely at this ornament you will understand why it fascinates me as a conservator. Like with a constellation, here you have to connect the dots to find the figures within the openwork. At the top is the heron leaning to the left with its curved neck and striped tail, at the bottom the turtle seen from above hidden among the bronze vegetation. Everything fits inside a drop shape wider at the base.
