The background is a smooth, light gray, empty studio surface, darker at the upper corners and falling into a soft shadow to the lower left. The face is oval, with broad cheeks, a gently rounded chin, full lips closed in a faint, contained smile, and a wide nose whose tip and lower edge are chipped and lighter in color. The almond-shaped eyes are unincised, with smooth bulging lids and fine brows that extend toward the temples; the gaze feels closed or lowered rather than directed outward. Across the forehead runs a smooth band from which rises, damaged, the uraeus, the royal cobra. Above it, a striated headdress or wig with vertical lines wraps the skull and falls behind the ears, only partially preserved. The ears protrude slightly at the sides. The stone, graywacke, is polished and subtly reflective on the cheeks, forehead and nose, while the top and sides are rough, worn, speckled with beige and whitish marks from fractures and age. The break at the neck is irregular. The human scale is unclear in the photograph, but the carving reads as life-size or close to it.","contexto":"This graywacke head, dated to about 1479–1457 BCE, comes from Egypt's New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, during the reign of Hatshepsut (c. 1479–1458 BCE). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Thutmose III was still a child when he came to the throne, so his stepmother and aunt Hatshepsut governed first as regent and later as king alongside him. They ruled together for 22 years. The head may represent Hatshepsut or Thutmose III; their features are notoriously difficult to distinguish, probably because the same sculptors worked for both. It is not known to which complete statue it originally belonged.","como_mirarla":"First look at the face as a whole and notice its calm symmetry. Then move up to the damaged uraeus on the forehead, a royal emblem now barely legible. Finally, compare the polished cheeks with the rough, broken edges: that contrast changes the piece from an ideal portrait into a surviving fragment.","dato_curioso":"According to the source museum, the sculptors may not have known whose statue they were carving until the identifying inscription was added at the very end.","preguntas":["What changes if this face is Hatshepsut's rather than Thutmose III's?","Why might two rulers who governed together choose, or accept, such similar portraits?","How does the damage to the nose and headdress affect our idea of royal power?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Cabeza de la reina Hatshepsut (?)","se_ve":"Una cabeza humana tallada en piedra muy oscura ocupa el centro de la fotografía, de frente y ligeramente desde arriba, sostenida por una delgada varilla metálica clara. Around 1479–1457 B.C., under the 18th Dynasty, this very dark stone was carved and polished as a royal portrait.
