It fills most of the frame and has an irregular, openwork silhouette. The material is forged iron in a very dark charcoal-gray, with a rough, slightly pitted and corroded texture and soft highlights on raised areas. At the center is the large, vertically elongated nakago-ana opening for the blade, with a smaller oval hitsu-ana beside it for a utility tool. The flat rim around these openings, the seppa-dai, bears incised Japanese characters on both sides. The outer rim is sculpted in high relief as a playful scene: on the right, the head of a puppy emerges with floppy ears, round almond eyes, a short snout and front paws gripping a twisted cord. The cord winds downward in loops and knots, forming openwork circles along the lower and right edges. On the left, a broad, undulating bulbous form suggests a shell or pouch, with three tiny drilled holes near its base and a curled spiral tail at the top. Side lighting emphasizes the volume of the dog's head and the intricate braiding of the rope.","contexto":"This is an iron Japanese sword guard made between about 1615 and 1868, possibly during the Edo period, by an unknown maker. The source, the Cleveland Museum of Art, catalogues it as Sword Guard (Tsuba) with Puppy Playing with Shell on Cord in its Japanese Art department, Arms and Armor category. Although inscriptions are present, the maker has not been securely identified. Tsuba served the practical purpose of protecting the hand while also displaying craftsmanship and auspicious imagery. Playful animal motifs became popular in later Edo metalwork. No further information about its original owner or workshop is recorded.","como_mirarla":"First notice the contrast between the stark geometric central opening and the lively, organic scene wrapped around it. Then follow the braided cord from the puppy's mouth through its looping knots to see how it stitches the design together. Look closely at the puppy's gentle expression and the engraved characters by the central slot.","dato_curioso":"During the Edo period many tsuba were appreciated and collected as miniature sculptures in their own right, and puppies were a favored motif thought to bring good luck and safe childbirth.","preguntas":["How does knowing this is part of a sword change the way you read its playful design?","What might a depiction of a puppy suggest about the values or humor of its owner?","What traces of age and handling can you spot on the iron surface?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Guarda de espada (Tsuba) con cachorro jugando con una concha en cordel","se_ve":"La pieza es una tsuba, la guarda circular de una katana japonesa, fotografiada de frente sobre fondo negro liso. I look at this forged iron in dark gray almost black tones and focus on its rough, porous texture. Corrosion has left marks, yet the reliefs still hold soft highlights that reveal the smith's craft. The irregular openwork and shaped rim catch my eye. The smooth black background is my sky and the dark iron is the cutout silhouette. In the center, the elongated nakago-ana is like a lunar phase where the blade once passed. Beside it, the secondary opening looks like a satellite. What amazes me most is that the rim is not a perfect circle: it becomes a floppy-eared puppy holding a winding cord, as if a playful constellation had been trapped in metal from the Edo period.","es":"Me gusta imaginar esta tsuba como un pequeño eclipse.
