It is a circular disc of dark iron, fairly thick, with a rounded rim that sits slightly higher than the interior. Its surface is neither flat nor smooth: it looks rough, porous and worn, with reddish-brown patches of oxidation, tiny pits and areas that are almost black. Light, apparently coming from above, grazes the upper rim and the edges of the cut-outs, leaving faint highlights that reveal the relief and the thickness of the metal. At the center are three large openings: one vertical, narrow and wedge-shaped, and two oval ones at the sides. Around them the metal is pierced in an openwork chrysanthemum design. Below and to the right, long petals curve like tongues; above, they form a kind of fan. On the left, a slender stem with leaves engraved in delicate lines curls around the circle, accompanied by small trefoil-shaped perforations. The contrast between the solid, heavy iron and the gaps where the background shows through creates the effect of dark lace. There are no people, texts or other objects; only this piece, monumental in the photograph, although it probably once fit in one hand.","contexto":"According to its source, the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a sword guard, or tsuba, with a chrysanthemum, by an unknown maker, made of iron in Japan, probably during the Edo period and broadly dated to about 1615–1868. It is classed under Arms and Armor and Japanese Art, and came to the museum as a gift of D. Z. Norton. It is not known who made it, who owned it, or on which sword it was mounted. In general terms, a tsuba sat between blade and grip: it protected the hand, helped with balance, and also offered a surface for fine craftsmanship. The chrysanthemum, or kiku in Japanese, is highly valued in Japan and is associated with longevity and the imperial house.","como_mirarla":"Start at the three central openings, which reveal how the piece was mounted, and then follow the circular movement of the petals. Look next at the left side: the engraved stem is easy to miss, but it turns a pattern of holes into a recognizable plant. Finally, notice how much of the disc is empty space, and how that lightness contrasts with the weight of iron.","dato_curioso":"Japan's imperial emblem is a stylized sixteen-petal chrysanthemum, which is why this flower carries a prestige that goes far beyond decoration.","preguntas":["What changes when an object made for a weapon is decorated with an open flower?","How do the empty spaces help or hinder the guard's protective function?","What can the wear to the iron tell us that a perfectly preserved surface could not?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Guarda de espada (tsuba) con crisantemo, autor desconocido, c. 1615–1868","se_ve":"La pieza ocupa casi todo el encuadre, vista de frente y en el centro, flotando sobre un fondo continuo que pasa del negro en la parte superior a un gris suave en la inferior. I focus on the surface because it tells the story of the material.
