The right half is the Atlantic Ocean, a deep, velvety black with almost no detail except for faint, soft streaks of low clouds near the southern edge. To the left, the landmass of eastern South America glitters with thousands of white to warm-white points of light, forming dense coastal filaments, bright urban clusters and sparse inland speckles like scattered sparks. Two intensely bright cores dominate the upper right — São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro — with radiant halos and sprawling suburban glows. Farther south, an equally brilliant double glow marks Montevideo and Buenos Aires, divided by the dark gap of the Río de la Plata estuary. A fine golden line traces national borders and the shoreline, overlaid with small white labels for Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and the Atlantic Ocean. A 200 km scale bar and a north arrow sit in the lower right corner. The light is artificial and crisp, the contrast extreme between natural darkness and human illumination, and the resolution reveals a hierarchy of scale from metropolitan brilliance to tiny isolated hamlets visible as single pinpricks.","contexto":"This view was acquired on the night of July 20, 2012 by the Suomi NPP satellite, named for Verner Suomi and operated by NASA with NOAA support. It was taken with the Day-Night Band of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), which senses light from green to near-infrared and filters faint signals such as city lights, wildfires and reflected moonlight, as described in the NASA GSFC source. The image covers part of South America's Atlantic coast and was processed by Jesse Allen and Robert Simmon for the NASA Earth Observatory. Suomi NPP orbits at 824 kilometers altitude and passes over any given point twice daily. As the source caption notes, city lights are one of the clearest indicators of human settlement across the planet.","como_mirarla":"Start with the two brilliant bursts at the top right for São Paulo and Rio, then follow the golden coastline south to the paired glow of Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Then look inland into the darkness and notice how faint isolated dots trace roads and borders invisible by day.","dato_curioso":"VIIRS Day-Night Band is sensitive enough to detect a single streetlight, allowing scientists to map global urbanization, monitor wildfires and even track illegal fishing fleets at night.","preguntas":["What does the uneven pattern of lights tell you about where people live and where nature remains dark?","How does seeing borders as thin golden lines among lights change your sense of territory?","What does it feel like to recognize your world as a pattern of lights seen from space?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Luces nocturnas de la costa atlántica de Sudamérica","se_ve":"Vista satelital nocturna en blanco y negro con acentos dorados, tomada desde arriba en formato vertical.
