In the center and lower right, an elongated landmass dominates with rugged, mottled terrain in greens, tans and browns that suggest dense vegetation, bare soil and mountainous relief; tiny scattered white flecks are low clouds casting minimal shadow. Just off its northwestern tip lies Île Balabio, a smaller, irregularly shaped island, plus a few even smaller islets to the west. The most striking element is the water, rendered as a depth map in blue. Far offshore, a uniform, very deep navy indicates open ocean. Closer to land, the sea lightens through gradients of turquoise, pale aquamarine and milky cyan that trace coral reef ridges, sand bars and shallow lagoons. Thin, bright, lace-like lines form near-continuous barriers encircling the islands; east of Balabio a larger semi-enclosed lagoon appears as a smooth, light-blue basin, while to the north of Grande Terre the dark ocean remains unenclosed. The overall composition juxtaposes the rough, compact texture of land against the translucent, fluid patterns of the sea, with sharp color boundaries marking ecological edges.","contexto":"This scientific image was acquired on May 10, 2001, by the Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus on NASA’s Landsat 7 satellite and created by Jesse Allen using Landsat data. It shows Île Balabio off the northern tip of Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia, a French-governed archipelago about 1,200 kilometers east of Australia. It illustrates the region’s lagoons and reefs, described as the world’s third-largest coral reef structure. In July 2008, after this image was taken, UNESCO added the lagoons to its World Heritage list for their exceptional biodiversity. Water color differences visible here correspond to depth, with palest tones over shallow reef crests and darkest blues over deeper waters.","como_mirarla":"Start with the contrast between the earthy land and the deep navy ocean to orient yourself to northern Grande Terre. Then trace the thin turquoise rims that outline the reefs and lagoons. Notice how the gradual shift from pale to dark blue reads as a hidden topography beneath the sea surface.","dato_curioso":"New Caledonia’s reef system is the third-largest in the world and supports unusually high biodiversity, including large predator fish, sea turtles and the planet’s third-largest population of dugongs.","preguntas":["What does water color reveal about landscapes hidden beneath the sea?","How does seeing an island from orbit change your sense of its isolation and connection?","In what ways can a scientific satellite image also function as a portrait of environmental vulnerability?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Lagunas y arrecifes de Nueva Caledonia vistos desde Landsat 7","se_ve":"La imagen es una vista cenital satelital en color natural que muestra el extremo norte de la isla Grande Terre, en Nueva Caledonia, y sus aguas circundantes. If I look closely at this zenithal view from May 10, 2001, I see color working as a diagnosis. I love imagining Landsat 7 orbiting and recording with its ETM+ sensor on May 10, 2001, later processed by Jesse Allen for NASA. The blues are not decoration, they encode bathymetry: pale over reef crests, dark in the deep.
