He is on his back, with his knees bent and raised, his feet flat on the bench, and his hands clasped behind his head, in a relaxed resting pose. He wears dark special eclipse glasses over his eyes, his head tilted slightly back and his mouth half open; he has a brown beard, light hair, and fair skin. He is dressed in a black jacket open over a dark T-shirt, faded blue denim jeans with a visible cuff, and black suede boots without laces. The bench, made of horizontal silver slats with triangular supports, casts sharp shadows onto the pavement at lower left. Behind him is short green grass with tiny white flowers, a dark tree trunk almost at the center surrounded by soil, and a gray concrete plaza marked with lines and a metal strip. In the background, out of focus, another bench can be made out with a person sitting on it wearing red and black clothing. The light is direct, hard, bright sunlight, with crisp shadows; neither the sky nor the Sun is visible, only their effects on this everyday scene.","contexto":"According to the NASA source, the photograph was taken by Ryan Hill on Monday, April 8, 2024, at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, during public viewing of the partial solar eclipse. That day, a total solar eclipse swept across a narrow portion of North America, from Mexico's Pacific coast to the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada. Outside that narrow path, the eclipse was seen as partial across the entire North American continent and in parts of Central America and Europe. In Hampton it was probably partial, which is why the observer wears special protective glasses.","como_mirarla":"Start with the man's relaxed posture, an almost too-calm stance for an astronomical event. Then notice his dark eclipse glasses, the only element connecting the scene to the sky. Finally, look toward the top of the frame: the Sun and the Moon are absent, and that absence changes the photograph from a record of the eclipse into a portrait of the act of waiting and watching.","dato_curioso":"The most surprising thing is that neither the Sun nor the eclipse can be seen: the whole astronomical phenomenon is told through a pair of dark glasses and a man lying down as if he were sunbathing.","preguntas":["What does this image tell us about how we experience an extraordinary event in everyday places?","Why might the photographer have chosen not to show the eclipse itself, but someone watching it?","How does the man's relaxed posture change the idea we usually have of scientific observation?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Mirar el cielo desde una banca","se_ve":"En primer plano, un hombre adulto está recostado a lo largo de una banca metálica larga, ocupando casi todo el ancho de la imagen. On April 8, 2024 a total eclipse crossed North America from Mexico to Canada, but in Hampton, Virginia it appeared as a partial eclipse, so this man wears special protective glasses and looks upward from the bench. He lies on his back, hands behind his head, relaxed, turning the bench into his personal observatory.
