It is the galaxy seen almost edge-on, inclined about 80 degrees to our line of sight. Its silhouette is irregular and mottled rather than a smooth oval: the core is denser and whitish, flecked with bluish and silvery sparks that suggest young star clusters. Along the disk, bright knots with a grainy, sugar-scattered texture contrast with faint, dark lanes where the light dims. The edges fray into a diffuse halo that melts into darkness. Around it, the void is speckled with tiny colored dots — foreground stars from our own Milky Way appearing as reddish, yellowish and pale blue grains, some with a soft glow. The light is cool, ultraviolet translated into blues and whites, giving the galaxy a pearly, electric quality. The scale feels both immense and intimate: the galaxy fills much of the frame, revealing its stretched structure and cloudy texture while preserving a sense of cosmic distance.","contexto":"Image taken on September 14, 2003 by NASA/JPL/Caltech's Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) space telescope over two orbits. It combines far-ultraviolet light, colored blue, and near-ultraviolet light, colored red. It shows the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 55, 5.4 million light-years from the Milky Way and a member of the Local Group, which also includes Andromeda, the Magellanic Clouds and about 40 other galaxies. Its cigar shape comes from our near edge-on view. Bright blue areas mark active star-forming regions detected in ultraviolet, while reddish stars are foreground stars in our own galaxy.","como_mirarla":"First trace the luminous diagonal from tip to tip to grasp its tilt and cigar shape. Then pause on the blue-white knots and notice how their intense glow signals stellar nurseries. Finally scan the background and separate the nearby reddish specks from the distant haze of the galaxy.","dato_curioso":"GALEX images translate invisible light: the blue is not its true color but far-ultraviolet, used to map where hot, young stars are being born.","preguntas":["How does seeing a galaxy edge-on change your understanding of its structure?","How does it feel to know the light you see traveled for 5.4 million years?","What visual clues help you tell what belongs to NGC 55 from what lies in the foreground?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Galaxia NGC 55 vista en luz ultravioleta","se_ve":"En el centro de un fondo negro profundo y aterciopelado flota una forma alargada como un puro o una astilla luminosa, inclinada en diagonal desde la esquina inferior izquierda hacia la superior derecha.
