Illuminated from above, its hemisphere shows soft yet distinct contrasts. Near the lower center lies a large, pale, heart-shaped plain — the well-known Tombaugh Regio — in creamy ivory tones with a remarkably smooth surface, bordered by darker, reddish-brown terrain. Toward the north pole at the top, a brighter cap displays streaks of ochre and tan. Across the disk, small craters, mottled gray and beige patches, and subtle fractures hint at icy plains mixed with rugged highlands. The planet’s limb glows faintly with a thin, hazy rim light. Textures range from polished, frost-like expanses to pitted, granular areas. No stars are visible in the surrounding darkness, emphasizing isolation and scale. The overall palette is muted and earthy — browns, creams, soft grays — giving the distant world a surprisingly warm and tactile presence.","contexto":"This scientific image was captured by the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) aboard NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft on July 13, 2015, from about 476,000 miles (768,000 km) away. It was the last and most detailed view sent back before closest approach on July 14, 2015. Color was added by combining the high-resolution LORRI frame with lower-resolution color data from the Ralph instrument acquired earlier that day. The original source is the NASA Image and Video Library, credited to NASA/JPL/Johns Hopkins APL/Southwest Research Institute.","como_mirarla":"Start with the bright heart-shaped plain at the bottom as your anchor, then move upward to compare the polar cap’s warmer hues. Trace the boundary where smooth ice meets darker, cratered ground to see the planet’s geologic diversity.","dato_curioso":"The heart’s smooth lobe is Sputnik Planitia, a vast basin of nitrogen ice about 1,000 km wide that is so massive it influences Pluto’s orientation.","preguntas":["How does seeing such a distant world in intimate detail affect your sense of scale in the solar system?","What differences do you notice between smooth and cratered terrains, and what might they tell us about age and activity?","In what ways can a scientific photograph also function as a portrait?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Plutón en color, visto por la sonda New Horizons, 13 de julio de 2015","se_ve":"En el centro de un fondo negro absoluto flota Plutón, visto como una esfera casi completa que domina la imagen. I see Pluto isolated in darkness, lit from above, with the famous Tombaugh region at the bottom center: the smooth, light heart-shaped Sputnik Planitia. To the north, the bright cap with brown patches, and around it craters and fissures in beige and gray. With no stars, just the dwarf planet floating, it reminds us how far New Horizons traveled.","es":"Como aficionado, esta vista del 13 de julio de 2015 me emociona porque es la última imagen detallada antes del sobrevuelo del 14 de julio.
