The backdrop in all three is a deep velvety black densely sprinkled with hundreds of pinpricks of light — distant stars and galaxies in white, soft yellow, pale blue and orange. At the centre of each panel sits UGC 1382. In the left panel it looks like a compact oval smudge of pearly white light, with a bright core and a very faint diffuse halo, isolated in dark emptiness. In the middle panel that halo is transformed: delicate filamentary spiral arms in icy blue emerge and curl around the nucleus, while the surrounding star field appears richer and more colorful. In the right panel a huge translucent cloud in emerald green envelops the galaxy, stretching far beyond the optical disk with a hazy, uneven texture and wispy edges. This veil represents gas invisible to the human eye. The sense of scale is immense, the light is faint yet crisp, and the contrast between darkness, stellar sparkle and washes of color creates a powerful feeling of gradual discovery.","contexto":"According to source data from NASA/JPL/Caltech dated 2016-07-11, the composite compares views of galaxy UGC 1382 from different telescopes. The left view from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in optical light shows a plain elliptical. The middle adds ultraviolet from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer and deep optical from Stripe 82 of SDSS, revealing spiral arms. The right adds low-density hydrogen gas in green detected at radio wavelengths by the Very Large Array, showing its true enormous extent. Because it is assembled from such different parts it was nicknamed the Frankenstein galaxy, and it is considered one of the largest isolated galaxies known.","como_mirarla":"Read the triptych from left to right to experience the reveal. Notice how something that looks small and ordinary becomes structured and then vast. Pay special attention to the green cloud — invisible gas that completely redefines the galaxy's size.","dato_curioso":"GALEX could capture the faint blue spiral arms only from space, because Earth's atmosphere blocks ultraviolet light.","preguntas":["How does this piece challenge the idea that seeing is believing when we use only one kind of light?","Why do you think scientists chose the nickname Frankenstein for this galaxy?","How does the green gas cloud in the third panel affect your sense of scale and isolation in the universe?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Galaxia Frankenstein UGC 1382: tres miradas a un gigante escondido","se_ve":"La pieza es un tríptico de aspecto científico y a la vez hipnótico, compuesto por tres paneles verticales alineados que muestran la misma porción de cielo. What fascinates me is how this triptych reveals the invisible through layers of light. On the right, the emerald green of hydrogen spreads like a translucent glaze far larger than the optical disk. The left panel from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey makes it look like a plain, boring elliptical.
