Its central crater is a very dark, almost black pit, with a thin whitish plume drifting to the northeast across the slope. Around the cone the terrain shows a radial, mottled texture: intense black patches of recent lava flows, grayish areas and zones of deep velvety red indicating vegetation rendered by infrared film. To the east the sea appears as a smooth, uniform mass of very dark navy blue that sharply outlines an irregular coastline. On the lower southern slope of the volcano, compact light-gray patches mark urban settlements. To the south and southwest a broad mosaic spreads in sage green-gray, beige and reddish tones, with polygonal patterns suggesting agricultural fields and rugged mountain relief. Small lakes appear as almost black dark-blue dots. In the lower left corner a black inset contains a luminous green circular instrument with numbers and hands. The image has fine photographic grain and the false-color palette characteristic of infrared film.","contexto":"Vertical photograph taken between July and September 1973 from the Skylab 3 space station with the Earth Resources Experiments Package S190-B five-inch earth terrain camera on color infrared film. It shows eastern Sicily with Mount Etna at the center, Europe's highest volcano, still active as shown by the smoke plume. Vegetation appears red due to infrared, visible on Etna's slopes, the Nebrodi Mountains at upper left and southern agricultural areas. Visible features include Catania on the coast south of the volcano, the Plain of Catania with its field patterns and lakes such as Lake Pozzillo in dark blue. Research was to be conducted by Professor Roberto Cassinis of the Servizio Geologico d'Italia in Rome with participating U.S. federal agencies.","como_mirarla":"Start at the black crater of Etna and follow the white plume toward the sea, then compare the black of new lava flows with the red of older vegetated ground.
