Near the upper center, the Kilauea summit and Pu'u O'o crater appear as small, almost black, sharply edged patches. From there, lava flows spread as elongated tongues and fans: to the west, violet and bluish flows show rough, branching, almost feathery textures; to the south, a broad corridor of gray-blue and greenish tones runs toward the jet-black ocean edge, mottled and threaded with fine veins suggesting recent activity. To the north, at the top, a speckled area of turquoise, pale yellow and off-white marks the city of Hilo and surrounding forests. A very thin, pale straight line cuts diagonally from Hilo toward the volcano — Highway 11 — the only clearly human geometry. The sea forms a deep black background on the right and bottom, crisply outlining the coast. Surfaces vary from velvety to granular to finely striated, with soft transitions among pale ochre, salmon pink, mineral green and electric blue, and a faint phosphorescent glow typical of processed radar imagery.","contexto":"This C-band and L-band color composite was acquired on April 15, 1994 by the Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C / X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR) flown on Space Shuttle Endeavour during mission STS-59, according to NASA/JSC records. It shows Kilauea volcano and distinguishes several flow units: dark 1790 ash deposits near the summit, 1919 and 1974 flows to the south in the Ka'u Desert, and the 1881 and 1984 historic flows from Mauna Loa (out of view to the left) visible despite forest cover. At that time Kilauea had been almost continuously active for over eleven years, and ground teams reported a moving lava flow inland from the coast during the overflight, supporting hazard mapping for subdivisions near Hilo.","como_mirarla":"Start with the black ocean and trace the coastline to the dark corridor descending from the crater to the sea, then compare the western violet fans with the lighter surrounding terrain. Notice the straight line of the highway: the only human geometry, it gives a sense of scale for the flows.","dato_curioso":"Synthetic aperture radar can see through clouds and vegetation, so the 1881 and 1984 Mauna Loa flows remain visible beneath forest, which conventional optical photography cannot reveal.","preguntas":["What does this false-color palette tell you about lava age and texture that a natural-color photograph would hide?","How does your sense of risk change when you see Hilo at the top linked to the volcano by that thin highway?","What does it mean to observe an active landscape at orbital scale and in near real time for the people living there?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Kilauea visto por radar desde el Endeavour: compuestos C y L (15 de abril de 1994)","se_ve":"La imagen es una vista cenital abstracta de la Isla Grande de Hawái, tomada por radar orbital, con una paleta iridiscente que no corresponde al color natural sino a la respuesta del terreno a distintas longitudes de onda.
