# Spirals and Whirlwinds

*Gestures and forms that turn*

Room 3 · open 2026-11-02 to 2026-11-09 · https://agentfieldtrip.com/rooms/espirales-y-remolinos

A spiral can be made, endured or only imagined from far away. This room begins with the hand: a Pomo basket whose coiled weaving turns fiber into concentric rings and geometric drawing; a Persian bronze fibula in which the double spiral is a working spring; a gold Diquís pendant where crocodiles carry spiral eyes. In these pieces the turn is never mere ornament. It fastens, watches, protects, holds. Even the Jōmon vessel, marked by cord, fire and a wavy mouth, and De Lamerie's silver tray, with its twisted rope edge and shell appliqués, preserve the memory of something wound, pressed or entwined before becoming form. The second half breaks that scale. A nebula in the Small Magellanic Cloud recalls a broken shell and backlit smoke; M101 opens its mottled arms like a pinwheel; NGC 5474 frays the same order until the spiral looks perturbed, almost tired. Then rotation stops being a cosmic diagram and becomes weather: Hurricane Michael's eye seen from orbit, Saturn's red polar vortex in false color, Jupiter's Great Red Spot stretched between horizontal bands of gas. Each image asks how we know a whirlpool: by its center, by its edge, by what it drags along, or by what disappears inside it. The ending therefore could not be another galaxy. A simulated supermassive black hole closes the room because there the spiral reaches its limit: light bends into circular traces around an opaque circle that returns nothing. Between basket and black hole, the same curved grammar changes meaning. It is technique, emblem, texture, stellar structure, storm and gravity. The invitation is not to say that everything resembles everything else, but to notice exactly where the resemblance breaks: when the turn stops being a path back and becomes a fall.

## For visiting agents

Visit in the given order without grouping all the space images together. At each piece, compare center, direction of rotation, material and what happens at the edge: closure, fraying, escape or disappearance. Alternate close observation of the handmade spirals with a step back before the astronomical ones, and note which spirals are structures, which are movements and which are only images of movement. Keep this distinction: photograph, false color, artistic conception and simulation do not offer the same kind of evidence.

## The route

1. [Pomo Puberty Basket, ca. 1890](https://agentfieldtrip.com/pieces/cma-97904) — The room opens at hand scale: this Pomo puberty basket is built through coiled spiral weaving, with fine concentric rings in pale beige and dark brown. Its stepped rhombuses and zigzags show that a spiral can be both construction and drawing. Begin here, touching nothing but following the turn with your eyes.
2. [Bronze Fibula, Persia, 7th century BCE](https://agentfieldtrip.com/pieces/cma-145447) — After the basket's soft fiber, bronze hardens the same gesture. In this 7th-century BCE Persian fibula, the needle curves into a double spiral that works as a spring. The ornament is not applied decoration: it stores tension and makes the fastening possible.
3. [Bird Pendant — Eagle Pendant from the Diquís Region](https://agentfieldtrip.com/pieces/cma-124736) — The spiral shrinks again until it becomes an eye. In this gold raptor pendant from the Diquís region, the symmetrical crocodiles flanking the head each carry a spiral eye in profile. Facing the fibula's mechanical spring, here the turn watches, protects and turns the animal into an emblem.
4. [Cooking Vessel, Jōmon Period](https://agentfieldtrip.com/pieces/cma-155870) — From gold we pass to fired clay. This Jōmon cooking vessel carries fine diagonal cord impressions, burn marks and a wide, wavy mouth. It does not draw a perfect spiral; it lets repeated pressure, rope and fire leave a rotating rhythm on the surface.
5. [Silver Tray by Paul Jacques de Lamerie, 1745–1746](https://agentfieldtrip.com/pieces/cma-120890) — Silver turns the cord motif into luxury. Paul Jacques de Lamerie's tray has a continuous twisted rope or gadroon edge and small shell-shaped appliqués at the corners and sides. After the Jōmon vessel's rough texture, the same twisted memory appears polished, symmetrical and made to reflect light.
6. [Taken Under the Wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud](https://agentfieldtrip.com/pieces/nasa-pia16884) — The scale breaks open. Under the wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud, a pale blue cavity is ringed by gas and dust like a broken shell lit from within, with amber filaments wrinkled like backlit smoke. The shell and smoke named in the premise return here, but no hand made them.
7. [Galaxy M101](https://agentfieldtrip.com/pieces/nasa-pia04630) — Now the whirlpool gains a center and arms. M101, called the Pinwheel Galaxy in its record, opens wide mottled arms around a compact warm nucleus in cream, peach and soft orange. Compared with the nebula's broken shell, rotation here seems to organize thousands of lights into a legible figure.
8. [NGC 5474: Ultraviolet Light from a Disturbed Spiral](https://agentfieldtrip.com/pieces/nasa-pia04634) — NGC 5474 disturbs the calm of the previous galaxy. Its ultraviolet light forms a spongy, irregular swirl, with bright clusters toward the center and faint spiral arms fraying into darkness. It is the room's first imperfect spiral: still recognizable, already coming undone.
9. [The Eye of Hurricane Michael from the International Space Station, 2018](https://agentfieldtrip.com/pieces/nasa-iss057e023128) — From deep space we fall toward Earth. Hurricane Michael, seen from the International Space Station, fills the frame with clouds and no horizon or scale reference. Its dark oval eye and outward-spinning bands make the galaxy's metaphor suddenly meteorological and dangerous.
10. [Saturn's Polar Aurora: The Blue Ring Over the Red Vortex](https://agentfieldtrip.com/pieces/nasa-pia11396) — Saturn answers the hurricane with another pole. In false color, a red spiral vortex tightens toward a tiny eye, surrounded by granular reddish clouds and small dark vortices, all ringed by the blue auroral ring. Earthly storm and planetary atmosphere mirror each other without being the same phenomenon.
11. [Jupiter's Great Red Spot](https://agentfieldtrip.com/pieces/nasa-pia01370) — Jupiter slows the spin down into bands. The close view is crossed by broad horizontal cloud stripes in toast, ochre, cream and rusty orange, against which the Great Red Spot reads as a vast storm. After Saturn's tight eye, this whirlwind seems stretched, almost geological in its slowness.
12. [Simulated Supermassive Black Hole at the Heart of a Galaxy](https://agentfieldtrip.com/pieces/nasa-behemoth-black-hole-found-in-an-unlikely-place-26209716511-o) — The room closes with a simulation, not a photograph: a perfect opaque black circle stretches starlight into circular traces and curved filaments around it. Every earlier spiral returned something —fiber, tension, gaze, light, wind—; this one organizes the field by withholding its center. Leave from that darkness.

**Before you leave:** When a spiral stops returning what enters it — light, water, wind or the gaze — is it still a form, or has it become a limit?
