What you would seeLo que verías

The object lies alone, diagonally across a plain, light gray background, photographed from slightly above with soft, even light and a faint shadow beneath it. It is a long, slender iron tool, dark brown and gray with rusted, worn patches and a dull metallic sheen where the surface has been rubbed smooth. On the left, the handle tapers to a rounded point, like an elongated spike or stylus; it thickens gently toward the middle, where the grip would sit, and shows fine scratches, mottling, and small areas of corrosion. Toward the right, the shaft narrows and bends upward in a smooth S-curve, reminiscent of a swan's neck, ending in a much smaller and more intricate element. There, a star-shaped cutter spreads into several pointed, petal-like blades around a short central spike, tinged slightly reddish at the tip. The scale is intimate and handheld, though no hand or other object is shown for comparison. The contrast is striking: most of the tool is plain, heavy, and utilitarian, while the cutting end is tiny, sharp, and almost floral. The empty background isolates it, giving an ordinary work implement the quiet presence of a sculpture.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the long, plain handle and follow it toward the curved neck; the tool only reveals its purpose at the far end. Look closely at the small star-shaped cutter: its delicate, flower-like form contrasts with the heavy iron shaft. That contrast changes the reading, from a simple spike to a specialized craft instrument.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this piece as a straw splitting tool, made in England in the early 19th century by an unknown maker, in iron. It belongs to the category of Tools and Equipment, in the Department of Decorative Art and Design at the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it arrived as a gift of Charles A. Larter. Tools of this type were used to push through hollow straw stems and split them into even strips for plaiting and straw work, including hats and decorative objects. The exact workshop, owner, and place of use are not known; it probably belonged to a domestic or small-scale craft setting.

Curious detailDato curioso

Seen up close, the cutting end looks like a tiny metal flower: its radiating blades would determine how many strips a single stem of straw was divided into.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the patina of this iron. I see dark browns and muted grays, with stains and specks of corrosion, but also a polished shine where a hand held it for years. I notice how the handle tapers to the left into a rounded tip and widens at the center, covered in fine scratches. To the right, the S-shaped neck strikes me as an elegant way to keep the hand away from the cut. And at the end, the small star-shaped cutter, with its petal-like blades, remains sharp and almost reddish at the tip.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I like to look at tools as if they were constellations. This one is long and slender, like a line drawn across the light gray sky of the background. If I follow it from left to right, I see the stiletto-like handle tapering to a point, then the smooth S-curve, like the neck of a floating swan. And at the far end, the surprise: a little iron star with points around a center. It is not from space, of course, it was made to split straw into strips for braiding, but it reminds me how everyday things can also be star-shaped.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a weird magic wand. On one side it has a long brown stick that ends in a little round tip, and in the middle it gets a bit chubbier where you hold it. Then it gets skinny and bends like a swan neck, it makes an S! And at the end it has a little metal flower with sharp points, like a star with lots of spiky petals. It is tiny, it fits in your hand. I imagine they pushed it into a straw like a drinking straw to open it up like a fruit. It is plain but the little star makes it pretty.
