What you would seeLo que verías

A very long, narrow horizontal frieze, embroidered in small, dense stitches, is divided into three crowded scenes by painted-looking classical columns with blue and brown capitals. On the left, inside a palace with patterned walls, a crowned, bearded king sits at right while a queen in a huge pale dress, lace ruff and pearl-like details kneels before him; behind her stand other women in dark, patterned gowns and men with ruffs, beards and somber faces. In the center, beneath a dark band with lettering, a pope in a tiara rides a horse led and surrounded by clergy with crosses and croziers, while two crowned figures kneel below in striped robes. On the right, another bearded king, enthroned and holding a raised sword, places his foot on the neck of a pope lying face-down on the floor, wearing blue and white; tonsured monks in dark robes watch or bend nearby. The palette is muted and aged: beige, ochre, rust red, deep blue, dark green and brown. The fine stitching flattens the figures, like tapestry, but faces, hands, ruffs, crowns, horse legs and small flowers on the ground remain clearly legible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First read it as three panels, like a strip of episodes separated by columns. Then look for who is raised up and who kneels or lies down in each scene. On the right, the king's foot on the pope's neck turns the whole frieze into a visual argument, not just a series of illustrations.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a section of an embroidered frieze made in England during the reign of Charles I, between 1625 and 1649, by an unknown maker. It is worked in petit point with wool and silk and is now in the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its three scenes — Ahasuerus and Esther, the pope chiding the emperor, and Henry VIII treading on the pope's neck — combine a biblical story with episodes used in Protestant England to debate papal and royal authority after the Reformation. It is not known who embroidered it, for whom it was made, or what larger piece it originally belonged to.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail is that the central insult is also written out: along the top, in capital letters, you can still read 'THE POPE CHYDING THE EMPEROR', with the spelling of the period.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on what the eye almost misses: the density of the tiny petit point stitches in wool and silk that flatten the figures like a tapestry. Here time has muted the palette to beige and ochre tones but I can still make out the deep blue of the tiaras and capitals. The painted columns organize three very crowded scenes and I wonder how this long narrow frieze made in England between 1625 and 1649 was supported.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Looking at this frieze I think about how we order the sky into constellations and here classical columns with blue and brown capitals order three stories. On the left I see a palace with walls of repeated patterns, in the center a pope on horseback under a dark band with letters and on the right an enthroned king with a raised sword. For someone used to finding patterns, this textile narrative is a map of power where each crown, cross and staff marks a different position.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This embroidery looks like a super long story on one strip and I like spotting tiny details. I see a kneeling queen in a pale dress with a lace ruff, a horse with tiny thin legs and a king stepping with his foot on another man dressed in blue. Everything is made with very tight little stitches that make faces and little hands look flat. The columns that separate the three scenes are like colorful doors that let you jump from one story to the next.
