What you would seeLo que verías
A low, wide ceramic bowl with a globular body, centered against a soft gray gradient background. It dominates the foreground with a rounded, almost spherical profile, a slightly everted thick rolled rim, and a continuous curved base with no foot. The surface is weathered and matte. The lower third is dark brown to charcoal with a rough, granular texture and patches of abraded slip. A horizontal band encircles the mid-body, bordered by two thin gray lines; inside, on a faded brick-red ground, a hand-painted black geometric pattern of interlocking triangles and zigzags repeats around the circumference. Above that band lies a broader red field with pale beige blotches where white or cream paint has largely worn away, leaving ghostly shapes. The rim carries a finely striped frieze of vertical strokes alternating red, black, and off-white. Light comes softly from the front left, casting a faint shadow beneath the vessel and emphasizing the slight irregularities of the rim and the chipped slip. Despite erosion, the handmade quality remains clear in uneven brushwork, varying pigment thickness, and small flakes that expose the earthen clay body beneath. Domestic in scale, roughly the span of two hands, both utilitarian and ornamented.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the low, rounded silhouette and the thick rolled lip, then move down to the bold black-on-red geometric band around the belly. Notice how the better-preserved red contrasts with the faded creamy patches above, a record of age and burial. Trace the small vertical stripes on the rim to appreciate the potter’s rhythmic hand.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a pottery bowl from the South Coast of Peru dated 900–1100, 10th–11th century. The maker is unknown, as is typical for pre-Hispanic ceramics. It is classified as Ceramic in the Art of the Americas department and was a Gift of Mrs. J. Livingstone Taylor. The source provides no further description, so a more specific cultural attribution within the South Coast cannot be stated securely, though it likely belongs to the post-Wari cultural horizon of that region. It is a utilitarian vessel decorated with mineral slips, a common Andean technique.

Curious detailDato curioso
On the Andean South Coast, the deep red was typically achieved with iron oxides and the black with manganese-based pigments, and the uneven fading seen here is characteristic of vessels long buried in arid sandy soils.

I pause at what time has done to this surface. I see the matte, crackled slip, the lower half almost black where pigment is lost and the central reddish band with black zigzag triangles. I am drawn to the outward rolled rim and its frieze of small vertical stripes in red, black and cream. Everything is handmade, with uneven paint thickness and small chips that reveal the clay body. It is a domestic, utilitarian bowl, yet carefully painted. I admire it because it shows honest wear, not total ruin.

This bowl feels like a small horizon to me. Its wide, globular body is like a low dome, and the geometric band around its belly reminds me of a constellation in sequence. The interlaced black triangles on an orange background are rhythmic, almost like a calendar of nights. Above, the red field with beige patches looks like a weathered milky way. It was made between 900 and 1100 on the south coast of Peru, but its geometry still speaks to us today, like a hand-painted orbit that keeps turning.

It looks like a giant soup cup. It is short and chubby with a little open mouth. The bottom part is blackish and rough, as if it got really dirty, and in the middle it has an orange ribbon with black pointy drawings and little triangles chasing each other. The top is reddish with light spots. And on the little edge it has colorful stripes like tiny sticks. I like it because even though it is old and faded it looks cheerful, as if someone painted it with lots of enthusiasm.
