What you would seeLo que verías

In the center of the image, in black ink on cream paper, a carriage pulled by three horses crosses a dark, turbulent stream, seen from a slightly elevated angle. The horses, heads low and manes tossed, wade chest-deep, their harnesses and muzzles rendered with fine lines and solid ink patches. On the right, a man on foot, submerged to his shoulders, holds the reins of the lead horse and looks upward. On the left, another bearded man in the water clings to the side of the carriage. The coach, oval-shaped with curved windows and one large wheel visible, carries passengers inside: at least three pale faces peer from the windows with alarmed expressions. A hatted driver leans from the box. In the background, the night is a broad horizontal mass of dense black ink, with irregular edges made of cross-hatching that suggests a closed, cloudy sky. The water is depicted with broken horizontal strokes, white splashes, and dark shading that create movement and foam. In the foreground, dark rocks and choppy waves fill the lower area. The signature «W. H. Drake» appears in the lower left corner. The scene conveys urgency, cold, and romantic drama.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the solid black mass at the top that frames the night and move down to the illuminated carriage in the center. Then notice the two men in the water and the horses struggling against the current. Finally look at the small faces peering from the windows, a detail that turns the landscape into human drama.

ContextContexto

This work is a pen and ink illustration by American artist William Henry Drake (1856–1926), dated about 1889, catalogued as a tail piece for Chapter LIII of the novel «Lorna Doone». It belongs to the Drawings department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of Miss Fannie DeForest. The novel, first published in 1869 by English author R. D. Blackmore, is a romance set in 17th-century England. Such illustrations commonly accompanied luxury book editions in the late 19th century. The source provides no further description of the specific scene, but the image probably depicts one of the dramatic travel or flight episodes narrated in the chapter.

I look at the contrast between the cream paper and the black ink, applied with a fine pen and very controlled solid washes. The water is built with broken horizontal lines and reserved white that simulates foam, while the night sky is a dense mass of ink with cross-hatching along its edges. I am interested in how Drake measured the black to give weight to the background and leave breathing space around the pale faces of the passengers. The signature at the lower left is integrated without competing with the scene. It is a tail-piece vignette from around 1889, made for a luxury edition.

I am drawn to that horizontal band of black ink filling the background like a closed sky with no stars. There is no moon or lanterns, only the white of the paper highlighting the faces and the foam on the water. I imagine the cold of a cloudy night in seventeenth-century England, as told in the novel Lorna Doone, where darkness makes crossing the stream more dangerous. The slightly elevated viewpoint lets us see the oval carriage and its curved windows from above, as if we were watching from a high and uncertain riverbank.

The water comes up to the horses' chests and up to the shoulders of the men who are walking! You can see three horses with their heads down splashing everywhere. Inside the carriage there are three pale little faces peeking out the window with a help expression. A man with a hat drives from the top and another one holds onto the carriage so he does not fall. Everything is black and white, like a very dark and cold night where the river makes lots of waves and rocks. I like to look for the tiny signature in the corner.
