What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of the image, against a graduated background that fades from black at the top to pale grey at the bottom, a small horizontal metal plaque floats head-on, taking up almost the full width. It is an ornamental keyhole fitting in gilt bronze, now darkened and mottled with age, its tones ranging from near-black brown to dull gold along the raised edges. The piece is nearly symmetrical around a vertical axis. In the middle is the keyhole itself: a round top narrowing into a vertical slot below, a dark void opening onto the background. To either side unfurl C-shaped scrolls, curving leaves, small round berries and pointed leaves that jut outward and downward. Above, a wavy crest or shell crowns the whole; below, a central notched leaf forms the lowest point. Two small circular holes, one on each side, were probably used to fix it in place with screws. The surface is not smooth: there are reliefs, incisions, areas polished by touch and tiny shadows trapped between the leaves. There are no people and no scale reference, but its function suggests a small object, made to fit in a palm and on the door of a piece of furniture or a room.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dark keyhole at the very center and let your eyes move outward, following the curves toward the pointing leaves. Then look for the two small round screw holes, half-hidden in the decoration, which bring it back from jewel to hardware. Notice how the supposed symmetry breaks slightly on close inspection: each leaf and berry has been finished by hand.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is an Ornamental Detail for a Keyhole, by an unknown maker, produced in France in the mid-1700s in gilt bronze. It is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, in its Decorative Art and Design department, credited to the Dudley P. Allen Fund. It is an escutcheon: a plate placed around a keyhole to protect the surrounding surface and decorate it. Its scrolling leaves and shell-like forms fit the taste for light, asymmetrical ornament popular in mid-18th-century France. We do not know what door or piece of furniture it came from, who commissioned it, or who used its key.

Curious detailDato curioso

A telling visual surprise is that the functional keyhole is almost the plainest part of the object: all the movement, shine and work have been lavished on the leaves and scrolls that surround it, not on the opening for the key itself.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why devote such elaborate ornament to something as small and everyday as a keyhole?¿Por qué dedicar un ornamento tan elaborado a algo tan pequeño y cotidiano como el ojo de una cerradura?
  2. What changes when an object made to be touched and used every day is displayed alone, like a sculpture?¿Qué cambia cuando un objeto hecho para tocarse y usarse a diario se exhibe solo, como si fuera una escultura?
  3. If you could not see its central hole, would you read this piece as jewellery, plant, or armour?

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the surface of this French gilt bronze keyhole escutcheon from the mid eighteenth century. I see the darkened and mottled metal, with dull gold surviving only on the raised edges and C shaped scrolls. I notice the two small side holes for screws, the fine incisions between leaves and little round fruits and the polished wear from touch. That central eye with a circle and narrow slit is a void that protected and decorated at once.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I imagine this escutcheon as a small symmetrical constellation floating against a background fading from black to light gray. At the center there is a dark void, like an eclipse, a circle narrowing into a vertical slit. Around it unfold orbits of gilt bronze shaped as curved leaves, scrolls and round fruits. Above a wavy crest like a shell crowns the whole, below a toothed leaf marks the south of this domestic galaxy.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the little face of a shiny metal monster! In the middle it has a dark little hole shaped like a circle with a tail, where the secret key would go in. On the sides it has curly tails like snail shells, pointy little leaves and tiny balls like little fruits. On top it wears a wavy crown like a seashell and below a little leaf with teeth. It looks old and spotty, in dark golden color, and it has two tiny holes to attach it to the door and keep secrets.
