What you would seeLo que verías
The photograph shows both sides of a round bronze medal, set side by side, upright on a smooth surface against a background that fades from dark gray at the top to light gray below. Each face casts a soft oval shadow, which gives a sense of its weight and slight thickness. The metal ranges from deep brown in the recesses to warm golden tones on the raised areas, with a matte, slightly grainy surface and small irregularities typical of aged bronze. On the obverse, at left, an elongated woman stands in the right half of the circle, wrapped in a long cloak and veil that cover her head and fall straight to her feet. She holds a small child against her chest; her face turns toward the viewer with a restrained expression. Behind her stretches a low, flat landscape with a small working figure and a horizontal implement, perhaps agricultural, barely emerging from the relief. In the lower right foreground there is a leafy plant and a drooping form that could be a bird or a folded cloth. On the reverse, at right, slender branches, long leaves, and clusters of flowers curve up both sides to form an almost complete wreath. The center remains empty and smooth, except for a small signature or mark near the lower edge. The relief is low, delicate, and most pronounced along the edges of the figures.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Look first at the tall, still figure on the obverse, then lower your gaze to the small working scene behind her and into the field. Next, turn the medal over and notice how the plants shape an empty circle, as if awaiting a name or a message. The contrast between the crowded landscape and that open space changes how both sides are read.
ContextContexto
This is a bronze medal made in France in 1916 by Marcelle Renée Lancelot-Croce (born in 1854), according to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, which classifies it as metalwork in its Department of Decorative Art and Design. The work was a gift of Lawrence Hitchcock. The year coincides with the First World War, so the image of a cloaked woman holding a child may be connected with maternity, waiting, or loss in wartime, although this is not documented in the source and its exact purpose is unknown. It is also not known whether it was commissioned, who it was intended for, or what inscription, if any, may have been planned for the blank reserve on the reverse.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual observation: the reverse is compositionally complete, with its branches and flowers carefully modeled, but the large central space has been left entirely blank, with no text or figure, as though the medal were still waiting to be personalized.

I focus on the surface of this 1916 bronze. I notice the granular matte finish, the deep browns in the recessed areas and the warm golden tones on the higher relief, with small irregularities from aging. The veiled woman and child are modeled in low, delicate and restrained relief. I am struck by the weight suggested by the soft oval shadows and the slight thickness of each face. On the reverse, the vegetal garland leaves a smooth empty center that makes me think of material kept in reserve for later use.

I see this medal as two small moons standing upright. Each face is a full circle, like a disc, with soft shadows that show its volume against the background fading from dark gray to light. On one face, the elongated figure of the woman in a mantle fills the right half and looks toward us, with a flat landscape behind. On the other, the branches and flowers form an almost closed ring around a smooth emptiness. It reminds me of an eclipse with a vegetal corona.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
They look like two giant coins standing up and making a shadow. On one you see a lady with a long veil holding a little child close to her chest and looking at us with a serious face. Behind there is a tiny field with another little person working and a leafy plant at the bottom. It is not brightly colored because it is made of brownish and golden bronze. On the other side there are little branches with flowers making a kind of small crown around nothing, just a smooth empty space in the middle where you could write something.
