What you would seeLo que verías
A long, narrow, vertical fragment of cloth, photographed flat against an off-white background. The edges are irregular and frayed, with loose threads at the corners and small worn areas, especially along the left side and the lower third, revealing that this is a surviving piece, not a complete textile. Across a deep, slightly faded red ground runs a dense, undulating vine in dull, tarnished gold thread, twisting in S-curves from bottom to top and branching into large lobed leaves, curling tendrils, buds and pointed, shield-like forms. Hidden among the foliage are lions woven in the same gold, their elongated bodies, legs and manes camouflaged within the vegetation, so they are only distinguishable on close looking. Small accents of dark blue, turquoise green and off-white appear in tiny flowers and details inside some leaves, like flecks of enamel. The surface is mostly matte, but the metal thread catches the light unevenly, with brighter glints where it is less worn. The pattern repeats along the length, although the cut of the fragment interrupts it at both ends. No people, text or reference for scale are visible; its actual size cannot be determined from the image.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the red ground and follow the thick golden stem as it twists from the bottom to the top. Then look for the lions: once the first appears among the leaves, the others emerge from what looked like foliage. Finally, look for the small blue, turquoise and white touches that break up the red-and-gold duet.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this fragment is a lampas woven in silk and gold thread, made in Granada, Spain, during the Nasrid period in the late 1400s or early 1500s, by an unknown author. It is now in the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. Lampas is a complex weave that allows flat, clearly defined patterns to be built up with threads of different colors and materials. Nasrid Granada was renowned for its luxury silk weaving. What garment or furnishing this piece came from is not stated in the source and is not known here; it is probably a surviving fragment of a larger cloth.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual observation: the lions are so fused with the vines and leaves, in the same gold thread, that at first glance the textile looks purely vegetal; the animals only appear after a slow look.

What holds me here is what is worn and what still shines. The background is a deep faded red and the golden thread is opaque and darkened, yet it still catches light where it is less worn. I see irregular edges, loose threads and thinning especially on the left and lower third, this is clearly a surviving fragment. I picture the patience behind this silk and gold lampas to make those S-shaped vines, with large lobed leaves and coiled tendrils.

I see this fragment as a night sky. The deep red background is the night and the golden vine traces constellations in S-shaped curves that rise and open into leaves and tendrils. You have to look patiently to find the lions, elongated bodies and manes camouflaged in the foliage, like creatures hidden among stars. The touches of dark blue, turquoise green and bone white are like distant glints that help you find your way through the tangle.

There are hidden lions! At first I only see a golden vine going up with lots of wiggly curves, big leaves and little tails curled like springs. If you stare for a long time the lions pop up, they are super well hidden among the plants with their little paws and golden manes. There are also tiny flowers in dark blue, turquoise green and bone white. I like that the red behind is so strong and that the gold shines a little when light hits it.
