What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows both sides of the same circular bronze medal, side by side on a smooth grey background, lit from above with a soft shadow beneath each face. The metal is a warm, matte golden brown, with darker recesses that model the relief. On the left, the obverse, a woman's face looks directly at the viewer, perfectly frontal and symmetrical. Her eyes are smooth and blank, without pupils, her mouth closed and her expression serene. She wears a helmet crowned by a five-pointed star, framed by large laurel leaves, ribbons curling at the sides, and fine rays radiating behind her head. Along the rim, in capital letters, read HONNEUR on the left and PATRIE on the right. At the base, her neck and shoulders appear, with a scale-patterned garment suggesting armour. On the right, the reverse, a rooster stands in profile facing left, head raised and beak open as if crowing, its comb erect, one wing lowered and the other raised, with long tail feathers. It perches on a laurel branch that fills the lower half. At the top, following the curve, appear the dates 1914 and 1916.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the blank, mask-like eyes, then follow the rays and the laurel up to the star. Turn the piece over in your mind: notice how the rooster seems to answer the calm face with a cry. Compare the inscriptions on both sides to construct its message.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is Medal (1914–1916), a bronze work by French artist Auguste Dujardin (1847–1918), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art as a gift of Lawrence Hitchcock. The dates coincide with the first years of the First World War, and the imagery is patriotic: the inscriptions Honneur and Patrie, the female allegorical figure on the obverse — probably Marianne, a symbol of the French Republic — and the Gallic rooster on the reverse. The source does not state who received it, where it was struck, or what specific event it marked, so that is not known from the available data.

Curious detailDato curioso

A striking visual observation: the woman's eyes have no pupils or eyelids, which gives her a statue-like stillness that contrasts with the rooster on the reverse, shown mid-crow with its beak open.

  1. Why show the homeland as a serene, motionless woman on one side and as a crowing rooster on the other?¿Por qué representar a la patria como una mujer serena e inmóvil en una cara y como un gallo que canta en la otra?
  2. How do the words Honneur and Patrie change the way we read a face with no gaze?¿Cómo cambian las palabras Honneur y Patrie la lectura de un rostro sin mirada?
  3. What does it mean to commemorate years — 1914 and 1916 — that were still part of an unfinished war?¿Qué significa conmemorar unos años —1914 y 1916— que aún formaban parte de una guerra sin terminar?

I focus on the surface of this warm, matte bronze. I see how the light reveals the relief: the deeper, darker recesses hold patina and traces of time. On the obverse, the helmet with a star, the laurel and the radiating lines are modeled with precision, and the words HONNEUR and PATRIE follow the curve of the rim. On the reverse, the rooster and the laurel branch show well defined feathers and leaves. They are two sides of the same medal, photographed together on a gray background.

What draws me most is the five-pointed star on the helmet. It is the visual center of the obverse, placed right on the axis of symmetry of the serene face. Around it, fine rays open like a luminous crown, and laurel frames the composition. It reminds me of how we mark reference points in the sky. On the reverse there are no stars, only the crowing rooster and the dates 1914 and 1916 at the top, following the circular rim as if they were a constellation of numbers.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the medal has two little faces. On one side there is a lady staring right at you, with eyes with no pupils, wearing a star helmet and big leaves on the sides, like a calm superhero. On the other side there is a rooster with its beak open, as if it is crowing really loudly, with one wing up and a long feathery tail, standing on a little branch. I like that one side says HONNEUR and the other has numbers, 1914 and 1916, above the rooster.
