Bobbin lace

What you would seeLo que verías

The piece appears centered, viewed from above against a uniform black background, photographed as a horizontal rectangle of off-white lace. Its silhouette is irregular: the upper and lower edges retain narrow bands with tiny openings and a scalloped finish along the bottom, while the sides look cut and frayed. The structure is made of thick, braided bands with a grainy texture, crossing and knotting to leave broad, irregular holes through which the background shows. On the right, these crossings form an eight-pointed, star-like motif with small diamonds at its center; toward the left and below, by contrast, large oval voids dominate, recalling incomplete leaves or petals. The thread is not pure white: it has cream areas, yellowing, and faint age stains. Loose fibers can be seen, along with a small knot at the upper-left corner and double joins, almost like seams, between some bands. Beneath the upper-left openwork, a small rectangular pale-cloth label peeks out, bearing barely legible blue-gray ink and contrasting, with its smooth weave, against the roughness of the lace. Even lighting emphasizes the relief, minimal shadows, and fragility of the fragment.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin on the right, where the crossings form a legible star, and then move left into the larger, less orderly voids. Notice how the black background is not merely behind the piece: it completes the drawing. Finally, look for the small cloth label and the frayed threads, signs of its later life as a museum fragment.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this work is titled Lace Insertion, is by an unknown maker, dates to 1540–1560, and comes from Venice, Italy. It is classified as bobbin lace in the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, which received it as a gift from J. H. Wade. An “insertion” is a strip of lace probably intended to be joined between two pieces of cloth to decorate a garment or household textile, although it is not known what object this fragment belonged to. Venice was an important center for lace in the sixteenth century. In bobbin lace, multiple threads are crossed and twisted, worked with small implements called bobbins, following a pattern.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: in much of the fragment there is more empty space than thread, so the black background becomes almost half of the design.

  1. What does it change in our reading of the piece to see it as a fragment rather than as a complete object?¿Qué cambia en nuestra lectura de la pieza al verla como un fragmento y no como un objeto completo?
  2. How do the empty spaces help build the pattern alongside the threads?¿Cómo ayudan los vacíos a construir el motivo junto con los hilos?
  3. What stories can a technique transmitted through the hands preserve, even when its maker remains unknown?¿Qué historias puede guardar una técnica transmitida con las manos, aunque no sepamos quién la hizo?

What strikes me most is how fragile this fragment looks. Look closely, it is not pure white anymore, it has turned creamy and yellowish with faint age spots. The edges are frayed and you can see loose fibers and a little knot at the top left. The thick, textured bands cross each other leaving large open spaces, with huge empty ovals at the bottom left. That little light-colored label peeking out is not part of the lace, it is a later museum tag that helps tell its story as a collected object.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I cannot help seeing a sky here. Against that black background like night, the lace looks like a constellation. On the right there is a very clear eight-pointed star with little diamonds in its center, as if someone had drawn a compass rose or a pole star with thread. The rest are like orbits and voids, open spaces where darkness shows through. It is curious how something made to decorate clothing in Venice centuries ago now reminds us of the universe and star maps.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a white spider web someone left on black paper. It is broken and has lots of little holes, some tiny ones at the top and other big ones that look like leaves. On the right I see a pretty little star with eight points. The thread looks rough and a bit old, kind of yellowish. At the bottom it has a wavy edge and on the side little hairs stick out. I like to imagine it was part of a princess dress and this tiny piece fell off.

  1. #1

What color is the background on which the lace is photographed?

    HintPista

Look behind the openwork fabric, it is a dark solid color that makes the light thread stand out.

  2. #2

How many points does the star-shaped motif on the right side of the fragment have?

    HintPista

Count the points coming out from the center with diamonds, it looks like a compass drawn with thread.

  3. #3

What small rectangular object peeks out from under the openwork in the upper left corner?

    HintPista

It is not part of the lace, it is smooth, light colored and has barely legible bluish gray letters.
