Needle lace (punto avorio or ivory stitch) edging

What you would seeLo que verías

Against a deep black background, an elongated fragment of lace in raw ivory, almost bone white, is laid out horizontally and photographed from directly above. The piece is visibly several times wider than tall, with an irregular rectangular outline and three distinct zones. At the top, a narrow straight heading, slightly frayed with loose threads, served to sew the edging to a garment. In the middle, an openwork band forms a net of circular rosettes with about eight radial petals, each set inside a diamond-shaped mesh of fine thread; between the rosettes, teardrop and almond-shaped voids reveal the black beneath. At the bottom, the edge is scalloped: ten pendant triangular points, each topped by an oval medallion with a central star and a finely picoted rim. Even lighting emphasizes the matte relief of the thread, its slightly grainy texture and tiny knots, plus soft shadows that give volume. Small breaks, frayed areas and yellowed patches from age are visible, especially on the lower right edge. The scale suggests a human hand: delicate, translucent, almost like cut paper.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the straight upper heading, then move down to the central rosettes and see how each circle is built stitch by stitch. Pause on the lower points: each medallion is a tiny sun whose density shifts if you imagine it against the light.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a fragment of Italian needle lace edging from the 1600s, made in the technique called punto avorio or ivory stitch. The maker is unknown, as is common for textiles of this period. In the seventeenth century Italy was a leading center for European lace, used to trim collars, cuffs, handkerchiefs and liturgical linens. The work entered the collection as a gift of J. H. Wade. Its original specific use or exact place of manufacture within Italy is not recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso

Punto avorio refers to the ivory color of the thread and its dense, raised texture, created with tightly packed buttonhole stitches later cut away to form open areas.

  1. What part of the body or garment do you think this edging adorned, and why?¿Qué parte del cuerpo o de una prenda crees que adornaba este borde y por qué?
  2. How does knowing each centimeter was made by hand with a needle change your sense of its value?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción del valor al saber que cada centímetro se hizo a mano con aguja?
  3. What do you feel when contrasting the fragility of the thread with its survival for over three hundred years?¿Qué te hace sentir el contraste entre la fragilidad del hilo y su supervivencia de más de trescientos años?

What moves me most is the honesty of the thread. I see the straight upper edge worn with loose fibers needing stabilization. In the center the rhomboid mesh holds eight-petaled rosettes, and below the ten pointed scallops with oval medallions show fine picot and small breaks. The ivory has yellowed in areas with fraying on the right. I do not invent its use, but every tiny knot and soft shadow speaks of patient hands and age we must preserve without erasing.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me this lace is a night sky laid horizontally. The deep black background is outer space and the cut ivory is constellations. The circular rosettes look like eight-pointed stars caught in a rhomboid net, and between them the almond-shaped gaps are dark voids like nebulae. Below the ten pointed scallops with oval medallions hang like galaxies. It is delicate and translucent, and it reminds me that even the smallest thing can map the universe.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little bone-colored paper cutout floating on night. On top there is a straight strip with fuzzy threads sticking out, in the middle lots of round little flowers like suns with eight petals inside a diamond net, and between them there are droplet holes where you see the black. Below ten little peaks hang like tiny crowns with a star inside. It is a bit broken and yellowish in one corner, as if it were very old, but it glows and is so pretty you want to count everything.

If you count carefully along the bottom edge, how many triangular scallops with a medallion hang against the black background?

    HintPista

Look at the scalloped lower border, each point ends in an oval with a star.
