Bobbin lace
What you would seeLo que verías
The piece appears as a long, narrow horizontal band, shown whole against a deep black background that makes its openwork stand out. It is a creamy, off-white lace, slightly irregular along its edges, with small loose threads at the right end. The upper edge is fairly straight, while the lower one ends in a row of tiny scallops and loops. There is no solid cloth: the whole surface is made of fine threads forming a dense mesh of small holes, like a net or honeycomb. Over that ground, thicker and more tightly worked motifs stand out in low relief. A sequence of human figures and plant ornaments repeats from left to right. Women in wide, bell-shaped skirts and fitted bodices alternate with men with legs apart, hands on their hips or raised, perhaps dancing. Between them are scrolling stems, flowers, leaves and vase-like forms filled with small geometric details. The light is even, with no harsh shadows, and emphasizes the contrast between solid areas and empty spaces. At a distance the band looks like a pale ribbon; up close it becomes a fragile, porous surface where every figure is suggested by accumulations of thread.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Follow the band from left to right as if reading a sentence and notice how the figures alternate. Then look closely at the ground between them: the pattern emerges from tiny open meshes, not from embroidery on a solid cloth. The small scalloped lower edge reveals that this was a finish meant to stand out against another fabric.
ContextContexto
This is a bobbin-lace edging made between the 1600s and 1700s in Pescocostanzo, in the Abruzzi region of Italy, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its author is unknown. Bobbin lace is built by crossing and twisting threads wound on small bobbins over a pricked pattern, creating both the ground and the motifs at the same time. Pescocostanzo is traditionally associated with this kind of lacework. The piece belongs to the museum's Textiles department and was a gift of J. H. Wade. Its exact original use is not recorded, although edgings like this were probably sewn to household linens or garments.

Curious detailDato curioso
Looking calmly, the decoration is not only floral: men and women in period dress alternate along the band, so the edging tells a small repeated scene in thread.

From my work table, this edging tells me how it was made. There is no backing fabric, everything is cream thread crossed and twisted with bobbins, creating the open net ground and the denser motifs at the same time. If you look closely you will see the slight relief where thread builds up and, on the right side, a few loose threads that reveal its fragility. The top edge is straight, the bottom one ripples softly. It is a delicate balance between emptiness and matter, and that is why the light treats it so gently.

I see this strip like an elongated constellation against the black background. The openwork acts like a sky full of tiny luminous gaps, with more compact figures shining brighter on top like stars. The women in wide skirts and the men with arms raised seem to dance to a rhythm. Between them, stems, flowers and vase shapes form plant-like orbits. From afar it is a pale ribbon floating in darkness; up close it is a porous universe where every little hole lets light through.

It looks like a giant bracelet made of air. It is light cream colored and placed on a black background that makes it glow. The top is straight and the bottom has wavy edges like tiny teeth. If you look carefully there are ladies with bell-shaped skirts and gentlemen with hands on hips dancing. Between them there are little flowers and twisty plants. I like it because it is full of tiny holes and it feels like if you blow on it, it would flutter like a very fine spiderweb.
