What you would seeLo que verías

Centered on creamy, slightly textured paper with softly worn edges, a black engraved bookplate dominates with dense cross-hatching and crisp contrast. The vertical, symmetrical composition places the name Henry Chisholm at the bottom in an elegant, dark gothic script. Above it sits a shield with a gently pointed base, finely hatched with diagonal lines; emblazoned on it is a boar's head in profile, mouth agape showing tusks, eye small and bright, bristles rendered in short, wiry strokes. The shield is topped by a jousting helm in profile facing right, with a closed visor, from which elaborate mantling unfurls in curling, leaf-like baroque scrolls on both sides, heavily shaded to create volume. Cresting the helm, an armored hand rises gripping an upright sword that pierces a second boar's head with open jaws and a flame-like tuft. Encircling the achievement is a broad, horseshoe-shaped ribbon inscribed VI ET ARTE in shaded block capitals, left and right, while a smaller wavy scroll at the base reads EX LIBRIS. The background behind the shield is solid black, making the white paper highlights and metallic engraving lines pop with sculptural intensity.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the boar's head on the shield, then move upward to the helm and the crested hand holding the sword that repeats the boar as a pierced trophy. Notice how the curved motto ribbon frames the whole achievement and pulls your eye back to the center, and how the deep black behind the mantling makes the fine white engraving lines glow.

ContextContexto

This is a bookplate, a small ownership mark pasted into books, executed as an engraving and dated broadly to 1837–1920 according to Cleveland Museum of Art records, where it is held in the Prints department as a Gift of Arthur D. Brooks. The maker is unknown and the source description provides no further details. The heraldic design with the motto «Vi et Arte» — by strength and skill — and the boar emblem is characteristic of the Chisholm family of Scottish origin, though the specific Henry Chisholm associated with this plate cannot be identified with certainty without further research. It probably dates to the late 19th century, when elaborately engraved heraldic bookplates were highly popular among private collectors.

Curious detailDato curioso

Heraldic bookplates like this were a form of personal branding: the boar's head and the motto «Vi et Arte» are longstanding badges of Clan Chisholm, widely reproduced on engraved bookplates in the 19th century and now collected as miniature print art.

This intense black engraving on porous cream paper speaks to me of craftsmanship. Look at the very fine cross-hatched lines that create volume: the solid blacks of the background contrast with the white of the paper to give relief to the elongated heart-shaped shield. I notice the slight wear on the edge, the well-fixed ink and the care in the short dense strokes of the boar’s fur. It is precise work, made to last glued inside a book and to mark ownership with elegance. I wonder how its sharpness has been preserved for over a century.

I see this bookplate as if it were a heraldic constellation. At the center, the shield with the boar’s head in profile is the main star, with its small eye and well-defined tusks. Satellites orbit around it: the helmet with closed visor, the curly mantling like baroque nebulae and above the armored arm holding a vertical sword. The two ribbons with text, VI ET ARTE and EX LIBRIS, trace orbits that order the whole composition. Everything is symmetrical and vertical, like a telescope pointing toward the ideal of strength and skill.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are two boars! One is on the shield in the middle with its mouth open and super spiky hair, and another one up top pierced by a sword held by an arm in knight armor. There is also a fancy helmet with lots of curly little leaves on the sides that look like wings. Everything is in black and white on cream-colored paper. At the bottom it says Henry Chisholm in very pretty letters and on top there is a curved ribbon that says VI ET ARTE. It looks like a superhero shield for books.
