This is a narrow vertical print in black ink on cream-colored paper, photographed against a pale gray background. The sheet, with slightly uneven edges and a matte, lightly fibrous texture, fills most of the frame, leaving broad empty margins around the central image. At the center, the composition is held between two pieces of lettering. At the top, a curling banner reads "EX · LIBRIS" in capitals; at the bottom, a rectangular panel reads "CISSIE KUHN." Between them opens a landscape in deep perspective. In the foreground, a pale, almost triangular path comes toward the viewer, dotted with small stones, patches of shadow, and dark bands suggesting steps or changes in level. Tall cypresses line both sides of the path, rendered as dense, nearly solid black silhouettes. Their slender trunks are built from short strokes, and a thin, wavy white line separates one tree from the next. The dark foliage forms a narrow corridor. In the distance, framed by the trees, a bright hill rises with clustered houses and a tower or castle at its summit, drawn with fine cross-hatching. Above it, one large rounded cloud floats in a sky of close horizontal lines. The stark contrast between the black trees and the white path and sky pulls the eye toward the tiny, distant center.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two inscriptions and notice how they act as gateposts. Then follow the pale path between the black cypresses toward the small hill town. The thin white lines separating the trees and the single large cloud reward a slower second look.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is a bookplate titled *Bookplate: Cissie Kuhn*, made by an unknown artist between 1900 and 1920, on paper, and held in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art as a gift of Arthur D. Brooks. Bookplates are printed labels pasted inside a book to identify its owner; the Latin words *Ex Libris* mean "from the library of." What is known here ends with the name Cissie Kuhn: the source does not say who she was, who designed her plate, or which books it marked. It was probably a small commissioned print made to be reproduced, pasted in, and read at close range.

Curious detailDato curioso

"Ex libris" is Latin for "from the books of" or "from the library of," so the image needs only two lines of text to make a complete claim of ownership.

  1. What does this landscape suggest about the inner world Cissie Kuhn wanted her books to open onto?¿Qué sugiere este paisaje sobre el mundo interior al que Cissie Kuhn quería que se abrieran sus libros?
  2. Why choose a long, tree-lined path rather than a portrait or coat of arms as a sign of ownership?¿Por qué elegir un camino largo entre árboles, y no un retrato o un escudo, como señal de propiedad?

Look closely at the paper: it is cream-colored, matte and slightly fibrous, with slightly irregular edges. The printing is in black ink and all the contrast comes from that. The cypresses are dark, compact masses, almost silhouettes, separated by a very thin white line. The central path is triangular and pale, dotted with little stones and patches of shadow. It is a vertical, narrow sheet, photographed with wide margins. I am interested in how that thin line and the deep black have been preserved without smudging.

For me this print is a corridor toward light. Two rows of very tall cypresses form a dark tunnel that frames a tiny village on a bright hill, with a tower on top. Above there is a large, rounded cloud over a sky hatched with horizontal lines. The bright path moves toward us like a beam. Between the banner on top and the label below, the whole landscape is in deep perspective and pulls the eye to the distant background.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the entrance to a secret place. The path is white and has little stones and little shadows like steps. On the sides there are super tall and dark cypress trees, close together, like giants watching over you. If you follow the path with your eyes you get very far, to tiny houses with a tower on a hill. At the top it says EX · LIBRIS on a wavy banner and at the bottom it says CISSIE KUHN. It makes me want to walk there and see what books had her name on them.
