What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical rectangular textile fills almost the entire frame, viewed head-on and centered against a light background. The fabric is an olive-green silk with a woven pattern in a burnt orange-terracotta tone. The motif repeats in loose horizontal bands: stylized clouds in ruyi fungus shape, undulating ribbons, and small silhouettes of bats or birds with outstretched wings, all part of the Chinese auspicious repertoire. The silk weave is clearly visible, with a subtle relief and a soft matte sheen. Running top to bottom through the center is a much paler vertical strip, in off-white with grayish tones, heavily worn, with losses, tears and brownish stains that reveal the original green underneath. The edges of this central band are irregular and frayed. The outer edges of the cover also show wear, with loose threads at top and bottom and slight discoloration. The light is even and diffuse, without strong shadows, allowing the fine texture of the weave and the contrast between muted green and rust orange to be appreciated. At first glance it looks abstract, but on quiet looking the organic brocade shapes emerge.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First trace the orange pattern on green to pick out clouds, ribbons and bats. Then focus on the pale central band and see how wear reveals layers of time and handling. Notice the frayed outer edges: there you understand this is a used object, not just a design.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a book cover made of silk, dated to 1680–1720, during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911) in China. The maker and the exact book it protected are not recorded. Textile covers were commonly used to protect and honor books, albums or sutras, especially among literate elites. The brocade technique and the silk pattern are characteristic of Chinese workshops of that period, renowned for mastery of multicolor weaving. The bat and cloud motif is traditionally linked to wishes for good fortune. The fragmentary condition, with the faded and abraded central strip, suggests prolonged use and later labels or reinforcements now lost.

Curious detailDato curioso

Silk with bat and cloud patterns like this combined visual play and symbolic language, as the Chinese word for bat sounds like the word for good fortune.

I pause to look at what time has made visible. This olive green silk with terracotta brocade looks tired and beautiful. At the center the grayish ivory strip is faded, with tears, brownish stains and frayed edges that reveal the original green underneath. It tells me about long use, about hands that opened and closed a book many times. The soft matte sheen and light relief of the weave are still there. I do not try to hide the wear, I read it as history and protect it so it can keep telling it.

I see a textile sky. The olive green background feels like a muted firmament and on it float orange constellations: ruyi clouds shaped like mushrooms, waving ribbons and tiny bats with outstretched wings. At first it looks abstract, then shapes emerge if you look calmly, like stars appearing after your eyes adjust. The pale eroded central band is like a worn Milky Way crossing from top to bottom. An auspicious universe woven to protect ideas, not just pages.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic blanket for a book. It is green like dry grass with little orange drawings I did not understand at first. If you get closer you see tiny clouds shaped like mushrooms, flying ribbons and little bats with open wings. In the middle it has a white road all torn and stained, as if someone used it a lot. I like to think those bats bring good luck and guard the book. Even though it is old and frayed, it is still pretty and mysterious.
