What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an irregular flake of limestone in muted gray-beige, photographed frontally against a smooth dark gray background, filling most of the vertical frame. The surface is carved in shallow relief with four human heads in profile, all facing right, arranged in two rows of two, with confident overlapping incisions that reveal the sculptor's adjustments. In the upper row, on the left, a man with a low forehead, prominent nose and long pointed beard wears a headband; to his right, a figure wears a short rounded headdress and a large hoop earring with a clearly outlined earlobe. In the lower row, on the left, a figure wears a striped royal headdress with uraeus and a broad collar, with an almond-shaped eye neatly outlined; to the right, a clean-shaven, bald head with a smooth scalp and thick neck is visible. Raking light emphasizes the incised contours, the porous texture of the stone, the chipped and uneven edges of the flake, and small dark pits and surface wear. The plain background keeps focus on the object, which reads as a portable study piece, with precise linear detailing in ears, eyes and headdresses.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two upper heads and compare their attributes — beard, headdress and earring — to see how identities were distinguished. Then move to the lower pair and note the contrast between royal regalia and the shaved priestly head. Finally notice the overlapping lines and broken edges that mark it as a working sketch rather than a finished monument.

ContextContexto

This is a limestone sculptor's trial piece dated to about 1391–1353 BCE, reign of Amenhotep III, 18th Dynasty, New Kingdom, probably from Thebes, according to Cleveland Museum of Art records. Such flakes were workshop practice boards for artists to study heads and motifs. The better-executed side, seen here, shows four heads representing types as understood by Egyptians: an Asiatic, a Nubian, a king and a clean-shaven priest. The other side, not visible here, holds less accomplished exercises including hieroglyphs, an ear and an eye. The maker is unknown. The object offers insight into artistic training in ancient Egypt.

Curious detailDato curioso

Figural ostraca like this were the sketchbooks of Egyptian craftsmen, often carved on both sides to make full use of a handy limestone flake.

I focus on what the stone reveals about the workshop. This beige grayish limestone slab is porous, with broken irregular edges, and raking light shows overlapping incisions and the sculptor’s corrections. I see four heads in profile facing right, arranged in two rows of two, with very precise linear drawing in ears and eyes. It is a trial slab from the 18th Dynasty, around 1391–1353 BCE, under Amenhotep III, probably from Thebes. I am struck by how this portable fragment preserves the gesture of learning, without being a finished artwork.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an observer I am drawn to the order of this slab: four profiles aligned as if they were constellations on the same night. All face right, in two rows of two, carved in low relief on light limestone. Although it is not a sky chart, I recognize the intent to record human types with precision, like someone cataloguing stars: a foreigner with a pointed beard, another with a circular earring, a king with a striped headdress and uraeus and a clean-shaven priest. It is a trial piece from Thebes, from the New Kingdom, made to train the eye.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a drawing sheet but made of stone! There are four heads in profile, all looking the same way, as if standing in line. On top there is one with a pointy beard and another with a big round earring that I love, below there is one with a striped king hat and another bald one with no hair. The stone is light beige and looks rough with little broken edges. I like that the artist made small mistakes and carved over them, just like when I erase and draw again to make it better.
