What you would seeLo que verías
Black and white print centered on a sheet with wide margins, the paper showing a soft cotton texture, slight wrinkles and the embossed rectangle of the plate mark. In the foreground, two chickens or roosters are shown from the chest up, bodies in three-quarter view, heads held high and turned slightly toward each other as if interacting. The line is loose, nervous and heavily inked on combs, wattles and breasts, where black ink pools in thick, velvety, slightly raised clumps typical of drypoint burr. Breast and neck feathers are suggested with hooked, curved strokes, dense at the center and more scattered toward the edges. The eyes are deep black dots, the beaks slightly open with fine spattered shading. The background is flat, pale and speckled with ink flecks, enclosed by the irregular, inky border of the plate. Light is diffuse, with no cast shadows, all contrast comes from the ink itself. Below the image, outside the printed area to the right, a faint pencil signature reading Reindel is visible. The scale feels intimate, like a close sketch, and tiny dots and dashes of ink scatter across the empty space, revealing the artist's quick hand.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the two facing heads and their jagged combs, then follow the tangle of lines across the joined breasts. Notice next the contrast between the heavily inked centers and the pale, speckled background that makes the birds emerge from emptiness. Linger on the pencil signature outside the plate and on the embossed edge of the print.
ContextContexto
Work titled Chickens by William George Reindel (American, 1871–1948), dated to the 1910s according to Cleveland Museum of Art records. It is a Print in the Prints department, executed in drypoint technique. It entered the collection as a Gift of the Artist. No further specific context about its creation is known beyond its approximate date and American provenance. Drypoint was widely used by early 20th-century printmakers for its rich, velvety burr lines that hold extra ink, an effect clearly seen here.

Curious detailDato curioso
In drypoint the artist scratches directly into the copper plate with a needle, raising a burr that holds extra ink and creates the velvety, slightly raised black line visible in the feathers and combs of these chickens.

Look closely at the paper, not just the chickens. It is cotton paper, slightly wrinkled, with wide pale margins that let the print breathe. The plate mark shows as an irregular rectangle around the image. I focus on the black ink: it is thick, velvety, pooling in the combs and breasts. That is the burr from drypoint, which holds extra ink and creates that rich line. Even the little splatters and scratches in the background tell me about a quick hand and a very generous inking.

I see two planets with combs. Two chickens in the foreground, shown in bust view, turned toward each other as if chatting in a pale speckled void. There are no cast shadows, only black ink contrast on a luminous ground, like stars against the sky. Their eyes are deep black dots, tiny holes of inverted light. Their half open beaks seem to catch signals. The pencil signature at the lower right is like the constellation naming the system: Reindel. Intimate, close, like watching through binoculars.

They are two gossipy hens! They are very close together, heads held high as if sharing a secret. One looks at the other and it seems they will cluck any second. I like their black scratchy combs and their little feathers made with lots of tiny hooks. Their eyes are two shiny black dots. The background is empty with ink speckles, as if the artist splashed ink while playing. Down below there is a tiny pencil signature that says Reindel, very small.
