What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a square terracotta tile viewed frontally against a light neutral background, filling almost the entire frame. In raised relief a hippogriff is modeled in left-facing profile, with a sturdy lion-like body and a beaked head with a slightly open curved bill, almond-shaped eye and wavy crest flowing backward. The forelegs are bent and the hind legs rest on a small mound, while the long tail curls in an S-shape ending in a foliated tip. The surface is rough, porous and handmade in texture; the tile edge is irregular with worn corners and small chips. The base color is a warm terracotta orange visible on the high points of the relief, largely covered by a dark charcoal gray to near-black slip or soot gathered in grooves and recesses, enhancing contrast and depth. Soft overhead light creates strong shadows under the muzzle, chest and tail, revealing fine incised lines suggesting fur on the chest and thighs. The scale is small, like a handheld object, with a tactile sense of aged fired clay, dense and earthy, showing uneven firing and surface wear that gives it an antique, archaeological character.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start by taking in the full profile of the hippogriff, then follow the winding S-curve of its tail that balances the composition. Notice how the contrast between terracotta orange and dark gray is not paint but patina and wear that highlights the relief. Pause on the eye and beak, the fierce expression that gives character to the whole piece.

This unglazed terracotta tile speaks to me of matter and time. Notice the warm orange showing on the high points of the relief and how the almost black gray settles into the grooves, emphasizing each incision of the fur and every wave of the mane. The irregular edge with worn corners and the porous surface reveal handcrafted making and the aging of fired clay. I am drawn to how the soft overhead light sculpts the snout, chest, and S-curled tail, making visible the manual work of Moravian Pottery and Tile Works from the early twentieth century.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this hippogriff and think of invented constellations. Here the creature moves in profile to the left, with a curved open beak and an almond-shaped eye, as if crossing an imaginary sky. Its bent front legs suggest restrained flight and the S-coiled tail looks like an orbit drawn in clay. The small mound beneath the hind legs could be its tiny earth. I love that a workshop in Pennsylvania revived this being from European chivalric literature for a decorative series, joining medieval myth with early twentieth-century craft curiosity from before 1920.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It is like a lion with an eagle beak and a little plant tail! I like that it is shown sideways walking to the left with its little front legs bent as if about to jump. Its mane looks like wavy hair combed back and its tail makes a fun S shape ending like a tiny leaf. The tile looks scratchy with worn little corners, in muddy orange with gray shadows in the little gaps. It makes me want to touch it and make up a story where it flies even though it has lion legs.
