What you would seeLo que verías

The piece appears alone, lying on its side on a smooth gray surface, in the lower center of a horizontal photograph with a graded background: almost black at the top and pale gray below. It occupies a gentle diagonal band from left to right and leaves a great deal of empty space around it, which makes it look small, although there are no hands or comparative objects to reveal its actual size. On the left is the finial: a rounded dome of pale pink glass, with faint veining and slightly translucent areas, and a polished, glossy surface. Next comes a wide, dark metal disc with a worn edge, greenish and reddish stains, and a rough texture from the passage of time. At its center projects a short cylinder in beige and brown tones, resembling cork or porous wood, with cracks, accumulated grime, and a small break near the join. From there extends the most striking element because of its length: a thin, long, slightly curved little spoon in a creamy yellow color. It is smooth, with a soft sheen, narrows toward the middle, and ends in a flat, rounded tip pointing to the right. Light directed from above creates reflections on the dome and casts a sharp, elongated shadow beneath the whole object. The contrast between polished and aged surfaces is striking, as are the tiny specks on the background.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the pink dome on the left and follow the piece to the right, as if reading it in parts. Then notice the contrast between the polished glass and the worn disc and central cylinder. The long spoon changes everything: without it, this could look like a simple cap; with it, its practical use becomes clear.

ContextContexto

According to the source records, this is the stopper of a snuff bottle, made of glass, from China during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911). Its author is unknown, and no narrower date or place of production is given, so any more precise attribution would be speculative. Snuff bottles were small containers for powdered tobacco, and their stoppers often carried a tiny attached spoon for taking out a portion. This piece is preserved without the bottle itself, which probably explains why its internal, usually hidden part can be seen so clearly. It belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of J. H. Wade.

Curious detailDato curioso

The spoon is much longer than the decorative cap: in this type of stopper, the most visible part was the smallest, while the functional part remained hidden inside the bottle.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on how the polished and the worn coexist in this single piece. The dome of pale pink glass keeps its translucent shine while showing inner streaks, while the metal disc has a worn edge with greenish and reddish stains from age. The beige and brown cylinder, like cork, shows cracks and a small break where it joins the long, curved, creamy yellow spoon. I am struck that today it is shown lying on its side against a dark background, revealing the part that would normally stay hidden inside the bottle.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I see this stopper as a tiny planet with a tail. The pale pink dome on top could be a bright cap, the dark rough disc with greenish and reddish spots looks like a ring worn by time, and the cracked beige cylinder is like a rocky transition zone. From there extends the long creamy yellow spoon, curved and smooth, like a comet tail crossing a lot of empty space. The photo leaves it alone in the lower center, on a gradient from black to light gray, and its long shadow helps imagine scale and light directed from above.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This stopper looks like a magic lollipop lying down. On top it has a little ball of pale pink glass that shines like candy, then a dark scratchy little circle with green and red spots as if it were very old, and a beige tube with tiny cracks like cork. The most fun part is the long creamy yellow little spoon, curved with a rounded tip that looks made to serve sparkly powder. It is all alone in the photo on a gray and black background with lots of empty space, and it makes a long shadow. I like to imagine the spoon hides a treasure no one sees because it normally lives inside the bottle.
