What you would seeLo que verías
Against a background shading from almost-black grey at the top to pale grey below, a single object sits in the center: low, oval and hollow, made of metal, seen from the side and slightly from above. Its shape recalls an elongated ring or a small band — the walls are straight, the upper rim is thin, and the interior, visible as an oval, shows a dark reddish tone with blacker patches. The outer surface is a matte blackish brown, almost black, against which relief details in gold and silvery tones stand out. Along the lower edge runs a miniature scene: long-leaved plants, small pale-petalled flowers and fine stems suggesting the bank of a river or a pond. At the center, a tiny human figure in darker relief, shown in profile, walks leaning slightly forward. He carries a long golden pole over his shoulder, held in both hands; his clothing is plain, his face is barely distinguishable, and one leg appears to step forward among the plants. To the right, undulating lines and another long pole or net reinforce the impression of water and fishing work. Soft light leaves a discreet shadow beneath the piece and makes the golden edges gleam without hiding the smooth, slightly worn texture of the metal.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the tiny figure at the center, then follow the long pole across the dark surface. Let your eye drop to the gold grasses and small flowers at the base: that narrow band turns a functional fitting into a waterside landscape. Notice, too, the warm reddish interior hidden inside the oval.
ContextContexto
According to information from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a fuchi — the collar on a sword hilt — by an unknown maker, dated to 1700–1850 in Edo-period Japan (1615–1868), and made of shakudō. In a Japanese sword mounting, the fuchi is the ring finishing the end of the grip next to the guard. Shakudō is a copper alloy containing a small proportion of gold, prized for its dark patina. We do not know who made it, which sword it belonged to, or who used it; it probably formed part of a larger decorative mounting, now separated from its original blade.

Curious detailDato curioso
Shakudō begins as a copper-and-gold alloy, but its celebrated nearly black surface is a patina developed on the finished metal — a dark ground against which gold details appear especially luminous.

I pause at that even, near-black brown, which is the patina of shakudō, copper with a touch of gold treated to darken. It is not paint, it is the metal itself. See how the gold on the plants and the long pole stands out without harshness against the dark ground, and how the reddish interior reveals the living copper. The wear is slight and even, a sign it was protected on the hilt. I am struck by how the maker achieved that matte and bright contrast while keeping the scene serene.

This hollow ring reminds me of a small horizon. Its elongated oval frames a dark void, like a miniature night sky, and along the lower edge a tiny human silhouette walks with a pole over the shoulder among flowers and long leaves. It is curious to think that something so small, made between 1700 and 1850 during the Edo period, makes us look with close attention, as through a telescope. In that embossed waterside a whole world fits, still, under soft light that leaves a faint shadow.

It looks like a tiny magic ring for a giant, but if you peek through its hole in the middle you see a reddish color like a hidden secret. Down below there is a super small person walking among little golden plants and flowers, carrying a long pole on the shoulder as if going fishing. I like to imagine he steps carefully so he does not crush the flowers. Everything shines a little in the light and the gray background makes the ring float as if it were flying.
