What you would seeLo que verías
Inside a room with tatami flooring and large paper-paneled sliding windows, four women in kimono occupy the foreground and middle ground. At lower right, a woman seated on the floor holds a brush and writes in flowing script on a long sheet that unrolls over her lap; she wears a salmon-orange kimono with a white geometric star pattern and large pale circles near the hem. Beside her, younger and smaller in scale, another girl in orange and green also holds a brush and looks toward the writing. Behind them, a woman in a deep-green kimono kneels with one hand near her mouth and gazes out the window, her elaborate hair ornaments rising like a small crown. At far left, a tall standing woman in checked orange, white, and green layers looks toward the right, her hands calmly hidden in her garments. Through the window bars we see a pale exterior, dark birds in flight, low greenery, and a black brazier or bucket near the sill. At right sit a handled writing box and small containers; below are brushes, paper, and a tiny cup. Black calligraphy fills a cartouche at upper right and signatures and seals appear at lower left and center. The palette is soft and aged: beige paper, muted orange, olive green, black lines, and warm light with no harsh shadows.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the woman writing in the foreground and follow the scroll toward the young attendant beside her. Then look up to the two standing and kneeling figures, whose gazes lead you to the window. Notice how the quiet interior opens, through the birds outside, to a much larger world.
ContextContexto
This color woodblock print, dated to the early 1780s, is by Katsukawa Shunzan, a Japanese artist active around 1782–98, and belongs to the series The Six Immortal Poets, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held as a gift of J. H. Wade. It was made in Japan during the Edo period (1615–1868). Rather than showing the celebrated poets of the past directly, it presents courtesans in a moment of leisure linked to writing, a common ukiyo-e play between classical culture and contemporary life. The specific house, the women's identities, and the exact poem being written are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
A print like this was not drawn in color on paper: in Japanese color woodblock printing, the image was carved and printed block by block, one for each color, so the salmon orange, green, and black had to align precisely on the same sheet.

I focus on how this color woodblock print from the early 1780s is made. The beige paper has softened with age, while the muted salmon orange and olive green still glow. Look at the long sheet unrolled on the lap, the fine brushes, and the writing box with a handle on the right. The tatami floor, the paper sliding windows, and the steady black outlines create a calm and tidy scene with warm light and no harsh shadows, typical of Edo period ukiyo-e.

I look first through the window. Beyond the bars there is a pale, bright exterior with small black birds in flight crossing the sky together. The light coming through the paper sliding doors fills the room with a soft, even glow and no harsh shadows, revealing low vegetation outside and a dark brazier or bucket by the frame. It feels like a clear, calm day, with four women writing inside while the world outside keeps its quiet rhythm.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
There are four women in very pretty kimonos! The one at the bottom is writing with a brush on a super long paper on her lap and her kimono is salmon orange with little white stars. Next to her, a smaller younger girl also holds a brush and watches. Behind them, one woman in dark green kneels with fancy hair ornaments like a little crown, and another stands in orange, white and green checks. I like that they are all together, writing and looking out the window.
