The Little BeggarEl pequeño mendigo
Alphonse Legros (French, 1837–1911) · c. 1857–1911 · France
etching
What you would seeLo que verías
This is a vertical etching in black ink on cream-colored paper, surrounded by a wide pale margin and the faint rectangular impression of the plate. In the foreground, on the left and in shadow, a boy sits in profile, leaning forward with his head lowered and his hair short and tousled. He wears simple, loose clothing: a light shirt or jacket, a vest, and dark trousers. With both hands he holds on his knees a round, hollow hat or bowl, which he seems to look into or examine in silence. Beside him, leaning diagonally against the ground, are two long sticks resembling crutches or staffs. Behind him rise two tall trees with thick, twisted trunks and sparse canopies, drawn with dense, short, crosshatched lines. The left side is the darkest area, with rough textures of bark, foliage, and shade. Toward the right, the space opens onto a bright path or slope, with small stones, grass suggested by quick lines, and a luminous rural landscape. In the background are rooftops, a low building, and a small tower on a rise. The sky remains almost empty. At lower left are the initials “A.L.” and, outside the image at lower right, the pencil signature “A. Legros.”
Legros».
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the bright path on the right, then return to the figure hidden in shadow on the left. Next, notice the two long sticks leaning beside him and the round object he holds in his hands. That contrast between open landscape and hunched body changes the scene from a rural view into a portrait of waiting.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is The Little Beggar, an etching by French artist Alphonse Legros (1837–1911), broadly dated c. 1857–1911, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art and credited as a Gift of Ralph King. The source gives no further description, exact date, or place of production, so those details are not precisely known. Legros is known in nineteenth-century printmaking for etchings of humble figures and rural landscapes. Here, probably, the point is not to recount a specific anecdote, but to present a beggar child at rest within a quiet natural setting.

Curious detailDato curioso
The work is signed twice: with the initials “A.L.” inside the image at lower left, and with “A. Legros” in pencil on the margin at lower right, a common practice in prints to distinguish the plate mark from the artist's hand signature.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I first look at the paper and the ink. It is an etching in black ink on cream paper, with a wide margin and the faint rectangular mark of the plate, which tells me about pressure and the condition of the plate. On the left the ink is denser, with short crosshatched strokes that build shadow and texture in the two trees and in the figure of the boy. On the right the line becomes lighter and lets the bright landscape breathe, with the path and the distant tower. Below I can see the initials A.L. and the pencil signature.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer I am struck by how much light there is in a print made only with black ink. I see the contrast between the dark area on the left, under the two trees with twisted trunks, and the open brightness of the path to the right. It is not night, the sky is almost empty and the light seems to come from the cream paper itself. The seated boy, holding his hat or bowl in his hands, remains in shadow, like in a small eclipse, while the rural landscape in the background stays bright and silent.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This boy is sitting all alone under the trees and it makes me a little sad because he bows his head and looks into his little hat as if it were empty. Next to him there are two long sticks that look like crutches and I wonder if he has trouble walking. I like that the drawing has a very dark part with little lines and a very light part with a small path, little stones and a tiny tower far away. It seems no one is with him and he is waiting for something in silence while the sky stays white.
