What you would seeLo que verías
Black-and-white print in horizontal format, with fine hatched lines characteristic of etching and drypoint. In the foreground, on uneven ground covered with grass and furrows, two light-coated oxen lie resting beside a wooden cart loaded with large barrels. The cart, seen in three-quarter view, shows thick-spoked wheels, side stakes, and lashed casks. Behind it, two small figures, probably peasants wearing hats, lean over the load, one with back turned and one in profile. To the left, a vineyard slopes downward with low vine rows and stakes, where a third crouching figure works among the plants. In the background, the landscape opens onto a broad, luminous plain with horizontal lines suggesting fields, a river or mist, and distant hills. The sky fills almost the upper half, hatched with horizontal strokes and soft, irregular clouds. The light is diffuse, midday, without harsh shadows. In the lower left corner the handwritten signature «Daubigny 1865» is visible. The paper has slightly irregular ivory-toned edges and a well-defined plate mark.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the hatched sky to the distant horizon to feel the breadth of the plain. Then move down to the cart and the reclining oxen, noticing the contrast between the animals’ rest and the figures’ activity. Finally look for the solitary vine worker on the left; that small gesture links human labor to the landscape.

Curious detailDato curioso
Charles Daubigny often worked from a floating studio on a boat called «Le Botin», which allowed him to sketch and etch landscapes directly from nature; this print reflects his interest in rural life observed outdoors.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I first look at the ivory paper and the crisp platemark of this etching and drypoint. I am fascinated by the hatched lines that build the sky and clouds, and how Daubigny achieves a diffuse midday light with no harsh shadows. I notice the detail of the cart, the tied barrels and the two oxen lying down. The handwritten signature Daubigny 1865 below speaks to the printmaker's craft and his control of ink.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
I always look for the sky, and here it takes up almost the upper half of the print. Those horizontal lines and fluffy clouds with irregular outlines make me think of a patient observation of the atmosphere, as if Daubigny wanted to record the weather of the harvest. The even midday light reveals the broad plain and distant hills. I wonder what that same sky would look like at nightfall, with stars over the vineyard.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
I see two little cows or oxen lying down resting next to a big cart with barrels. They look tired from working so much. There are some men with hats fixing the barrels and another one crouched among the little vineyard plants. I like to count the big wheels and the little lines of the grass. The sky looks huge and fluffy, as if it might rain, but it is sunny and everything feels calm.
