What you would seeLo que verías

Two antique braces are displayed in parallel on a neutral gray background, photographed in side view under soft studio lighting that emphasizes texture and subtle shadows. In the foreground, the lower tool dominates: its U-shaped or bowed metal frame, made of darkened iron with an uneven, slightly rusted patina and pitted surface, connects at one end to a turned wooden head in deep reddish brown and at the other to a pointed metal drill bit. At the bend of the arch there is an ovoid knob in yellowish ivory, probably bone, with fine veining and small dark spots from age and handling. The metal joints show engraved decorative details and brass fittings with a muted golden sheen. Behind it, a second very similar brace shows slight variations: its central knob is of bright polished brass, smoother and more reflective, and its ends also include ivory bone elements and dark wood. Both share the same typology of hand-operated rotary drill, designed so one palm presses on the top head while the other hand turns the crank. Wear is visible everywhere: porosity of the iron, the polished glow of the bone, and the concentric grain of the wooden pads catching the light.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the contrast between the dark, rough iron and the smooth, pale knobs, then trace the curve of the crank. Notice the subtle differences between the two braces, especially the central knob, one bone and one brass, which changes the character of each tool.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art records, the work is cataloged as Brace and Bit by an unknown maker, dated to the 1600s and possibly German, though the culture is listed with a question mark. It falls under Tools and Equipment in the Decorative Art and Design department. The medium is given as iron alloy, copper alloy, wood and bone. The source provides no further descriptive text, so the specific workshop, provenance or original owner are not known. It is probably a high-quality carpentry tool from early modern Europe, where even utilitarian objects were often finished with ornamental brass and bone mounts reflecting both craftsmanship and status.

Curious detailDato curioso

The brace with its U-crank and chuck for interchangeable bits is the direct predecessor of the modern hand drill, with forms of this tool in use since the Middle Ages and greatly refined during the 17th and 18th centuries with brass and bone fittings like those seen here.

I focus on the material and its memory. I see two braces in parallel on a gray background, with light that reveals every texture. The iron frame is darkened, with irregular patina and porous areas from oxidation, joined to a dark reddish brown wooden head and a pointed bit. I am drawn to the ovoid knob of yellowish ivory bone with veins and stains from use. Behind, the other has a shiny golden brass knob. The screws and engraved details show ornamental care that I must also preserve.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see them as precision instruments, almost like a carpenter's handheld telescopes. Their U shape or broken arch is made to turn, with the wooden head to rest the palm and the central knob as an axis. One has a yellowish ivory bone knob, the other a golden brass one that reflects light like a small star. Cataloged as Brace and Bit from the 1600s, possibly of German origin, they remind me that measuring and drilling is also exploring, just like aiming at the sky.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like two giant corkscrews lying down one behind the other. The one in front is my favorite because it has a little yellowish ivory ball in the middle and reddish brown wood at the tip. The other one shines more because its little ball is golden brass. Both have an arch shape and a sharp point to make holes by spinning and spinning. They look very old, with dark and spotty metal, as if they had worked a lot many many years ago.
