What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a small bronze plaquette photographed from both sides, left and right, against a soft neutral grey background. The object is vertical and rectangular with a gently arched top and a small projecting base so it can stand upright. Its patina is warm, ranging from golden brown to deep coppery shadow, with highlights catching the raised relief. On the obverse, inscribed PEACE at the bottom, a nude woman kneels in the foreground with arms slightly open and head tilted upward, her pose conveying vulnerability and surrender; behind her, in fainter low relief, two winged figures flank a classical architectural structure, like a distant vision. On the reverse, inscribed WAR, two muscular nude male figures grapple violently: one standing leans over and throttles the other, who crouches and raises his hands in defense. The modeling emphasizes straining muscles, clutching hands and tense faces, with a tactile surface that looks both roughly sculpted and softly burnished. Scale appears intimate, meant to be held and turned in the hand, and the light creates a strong contrast between polished flesh and shadowed hollows.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Look at each side on its own first, then read them as a moral diptych: the open stillness of Peace versus the locked violence of War. Focus on the hands, open and receptive on one side, gripping and choking on the other; that detail shifts the whole meaning. Notice also the hazy, hopeful background behind Peace compared with the empty, claustrophobic space around War.
ContextContexto
This is a 1913 bronze plaquette by sculptor and medallist Emil Fuchs, Austrian-born and active in Britain and the United States, listed as American in the museum record. It is part of the Decorative Art and Design collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, gift of Ambrose Swasey. The work presents an allegorical contrast between Peace, embodied by a serene female nude, and War, embodied by a brutal male struggle. Made a year before World War I began, it belongs to a long European tradition of moralizing medals and plaquettes and reflects pre-war anxieties. The artist's signature appears at the base of each side. No further provenance details are provided in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso
Fuchs was a fashionable portraitist to royalty before the war, and this small double-sided plaquette, made in 1913, eerily foreshadowed the global conflict that erupted the following year.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas
The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I first look at the surface: this small bronze has a warm patina between golden brown and dark copper, with highlights on the raised relief and deep shadows in the recesses. On one side it says PEACE and we see a kneeling woman with open arms, very exposed and serene. On the other side it says WAR and two men grapple hand to hand, with tense muscles and clenched hands. I am struck by how the polished wear and the rough texture coexist in such a small format.

I look for contrasts of light and shadow as if they were phases. This vertical plaque with a wavy top edge stands upright and shows two faces of the same story. On PEACE the female figure seems to offer her light, with two winged silhouettes and a faint classical architecture behind, like distant constellations. On WAR the bodies eclipse each other in close combat. Made in 1913, a year before World War I, it feels like anticipating a sky about to cloud over.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It has two sides like a storybook! On one side it says PEACE and there is a lady with no clothes kneeling with open arms as if saying here I am. Behind her there are like two fairies with wings and an old building. On the other side it says WAR and there are two strong men with no clothes fighting, one grabs the other's neck and the other defends himself. I like to touch the muscles with my eyes and see how the bronze shines where the light hits it.
