What you would seeLo que verías

A long, narrow horizontal strip is photographed against a uniform black background that sets off its aged ivory color. Across the top runs a straight, compact band worked in a fine, repeated mesh of tiny openings; it acts as the heading from which everything hangs. Below it opens the main body, airy and pierced, made of arches, diamonds, crossings, and loops linked like a lightweight net. The lower edge is divided into seven clearly defined hanging points, shaped like stylized leaves or inverted arrowheads, separated by empty semicircular scallops. Inside each point, crossed threads form a star-like or geometric floral structure. The texture looks rough and fibrous, as if made from aged plant-fiber thread, with small irregularities, knots, loose strands, and slightly worn areas, especially at the far left and right ends. A few passages appear more fragile or frayed, and the upper left end has a small rolled-up tangle. The lighting is frontal and diffuse, casting no strong shadows, but it still reveals the slight relief where the threads cross. No human reference is included for scale, yet the delicacy of the mesh suggests a small piece, meant to be seen up close as an ornamental edging.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the straight top band from side to side, then let your eye drop into the hanging points. Notice how each point repeats without being perfectly identical, and how the empty semicircles between them are as much a part of the design as the thread itself.

ContextContexto

According to the source information, this piece is entitled Lace Edging with Points, by an unknown maker, dated to the 1500s–1600s, from Venice, Italy, and made as bobbin lace. It belongs to the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, which received it as a gift from J. H. Wade. Venice was an important center for European lace in the early modern period, and edgings like this one probably trimmed garments or household textiles. It is not known what this strip originally edged, nor who made or used it.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although it looks like a single continuous net, bobbin lace is built by crossing and twisting many pairs of threads wound on separate bobbins, one small movement at a time.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What kind of garment or cloth do you imagine this edging once finished, and how would movement have changed it?¿Qué tipo de prenda o tela imaginas que remataba este encaje, y cómo lo habría cambiado el movimiento?
  2. How does the balance between solid thread and empty space shape the feeling of lightness or fragility?¿Cómo influye el equilibrio entre hilo y espacio vacío en la sensación de ligereza o fragilidad?
  3. What is lost, and what is preserved, when a useful textile fragment is shown alone against a black background?¿Qué se pierde y qué se conserva cuando un fragmento textil útil se muestra solo sobre un fondo negro?

I focus on how fragile this ivory strip is. I see the compact heading band at the top that was used for sewing, and below the openwork mesh with diamonds and crosses ending in seven well defined points. I notice worn threads, knots and loose fibers at the ends, signs of an aged vegetable thread from the 16th and 17th centuries. Under soft diffuse light I can see the minimal relief of each crossing made with Venetian bobbin lace. It is a small piece meant to be seen up close, and every fray tells of its history and fragility.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this strip as a constellation against a black background. The heading band on top is the horizon and from it hang seven points like suspended stars, separated by semicircular voids that feel like dark sky. Each point holds a star or geometric flower made of crossed threads, similar to a sky chart. The mesh of arches and diamonds reminds me of intertwined orbits. It is a Venetian bobbin lace edging in pale ivory, delicate and light, made to adorn something larger, just as a constellation adorns the night and helps us find our way.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like an upside down little crown or seven tiny fangs made of cookie colored lace. On top there is a straight little strip with many tiny eyelets and below hang points like little arrows or leaves with tiny stars inside. I like counting the little holes that look like windows and watching how the threads hug each other to make crosses and diamonds. It looks very old, with some loose little hairs and slightly broken edges. I imagine it decorated a fancy dress in Venice a long time ago and someone sewed it very carefully to make it look pretty.

How many well defined hanging points does the edging have along its lower edge?

    HintPista

Count the shapes that look like leaves or little arrows hanging downward, separated by semicircular gaps.

  2. #2

What ivory color does the lace strip show against the black background?

    HintPista

Look for the main light tone of the threads, like a pale cookie color, that stands out against the dark background.

  3. #3

What is the straight and compact band at the top that was used to sew the lace called?

    HintPista

Look at the straight upper edge with fine mesh and eyelets, different from the openwork part below.
