Bobbin lace

What you would seeLo que verías

A narrow, elongated strip of lace lies horizontally in the center of the image against a flat black background that sharpens its openwork silhouette. The lace is a pale ivory with gentle yellowing from age, many times longer than it is tall, preserving its selvage along the top edge, which appears straight and slightly scalloped, while the lower edge is more irregular with tiny points. The pattern is a repetition of geometric voids — diamonds, triangles and inverted heart-like shapes — that let the dark ground show through, creating a rhythm of solid and empty areas. In the foreground the braided texture of the thread is visible, with minute knots and a soft relief typical of bobbin lace, where each thread crosses with precise handwork. Loose, frayed threads stick out at the left and right ends, signaling wear and fragility. On closer inspection there are subtle shifts in density, faint ochre stains, and a nearly invisible metal pin at the far right holding the strip in place. Even, diffuse light reveals the delicacy of the handmade work and its intimate scale, made to be appreciated up close as an adornment for clothing.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the strip from left to right to catch the rhythm of geometric voids. Then focus on the straight upper selvage and compare it to the more broken lower edge; that contrast explains its function. Notice the loose threads at the ends, a reminder that this is a fragile handmade fragment.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a lace insertion with selvage by an unknown maker, dated 1580 to 1599 and attributed to Venice, Italy. The technique is bobbin lace, typical of Venetian production in the late 16th century. No original description of use is recorded, but its long, straight form probably served as a decorative insertion between fabrics for shirts, collars, or household and liturgical linens. It belongs to the Textiles department and entered the collection as part of the Gift of J. H. Wade. The workshop name and patron are not known.

Venice was one of the earliest European centers where bobbin lace developed as a luxury industry in the late 16th century, and its geometric openwork designs like this one influenced fashion across Europe.

  1. How does seeing the lace against black change its appearance compared to seeing it on fabric or skin?¿Cómo cambia la percepción del encaje al verlo sobre fondo negro en lugar de sobre una tela o piel?
  2. What kind of labor and time do you imagine behind each tiny repeated knot along the strip?¿Qué trabajo y tiempo imaginas detrás de cada pequeño nudo repetido a lo largo de la tira?

I pause to consider how fragile this strip is. I see its pale ivory tone with yellowing and ochre spots that reveal its age. I notice the straight upper edge and the lower border with little points, and the loose threads at the ends that speak of wear. I am moved by the bobbin work, each tiny crossing and knot made by hand in Venice more than four centuries ago. That almost invisible pin on the right reminds us it needs support to be seen without breaking.

This strip reminds me of looking at constellations. Against the deep black background, the open spaces of the lace shine like cut-out stars. The diamonds, triangles and inverted hearts repeat like an ordered sky map. I imagine someone in Venice, between 1580 and 1599, tracing this openwork universe thread by thread, without a telescope, only with patience. Up close each void lets darkness through, and together they create an intimate, delicate geometric sky, made to be discovered slowly and with attention.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic border for a princess cape. It is long and narrow, the color of a light vanilla cookie, with lots of little holes shaped like diamonds and upside-down hearts. If you look closely, the top has a straight edge and the bottom has tiny points like little teeth. It has some loose threads at the ends because it is very old and delicate. I imagine it was sewn between two fabrics to make a shirt or a tablecloth prettier a long time ago in Venice.

I am small, metallic and almost invisible, but I hold the strip at its right end so it does not fall. What am I?

We are openwork shapes that repeat in the lace and let the black background show through. I include diamonds and triangles. What are we?
