What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a horizontal fragment of off-white lace, photographed against a uniform black background that emphasizes every opening and raised thread. It spans almost the full width of the image. Its upper part is rectangular, while the lower edge ends in three large hanging points, like teeth or stylized leaves. In the foreground, the top edge is straight but uneven, with tiny waves and knots. Below it runs a dense band of repeated motifs: diamonds, crosses, ovals, and small flowers with rounded petals, joined by a network of interlaced threads that leaves dark openings of different sizes. A tighter horizontal line separates that band from the lower section. Below, three thick horseshoe-shaped arches frame semicircular empty spaces. From each arch hangs an elongated triangular form, branching, with notches, pointed projections, and a small straight extension at the tip. The thread, probably linen, looks slightly thick, matte, and fibrous; in places it forms denser cords, and in others open meshes. There are faint yellowish spots, wear at the ends, and loose threads at the sides, signs of age and fragility. Even lighting, without strong shadows, reveals the small scale and the repetitive handwork.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the straight upper band and follow its repeated pattern from left to right, then drop your gaze to the three hanging points. Notice how the solid, thicker arcs contrast with the open mesh above them. Up close, the small yellowed spots and frayed ends change the first impression of perfect delicacy.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is a lace insertion with an edging of points, by an unknown maker, dated to 1600–1640 and attributed to Italy, Venice or Genoa. It is made in bobbin lace and belongs to the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, which received it as a gift from J. H. Wade. Who made it, and the exact garment or household textile it was used on, are not known; it probably formed a decorative border sewn onto another fabric. Venice and Genoa were both recognized centers of lacemaking in this period.

Curious detailDato curioso

Bobbin lace is not woven on a loom: it is made by crossing and twisting pairs of threads wound on bobbins, worked over a pattern, so the openwork is built thread by thread.

I look at this whitish fragment on a black background and think about its fragility. I see three hanging points at the bottom, an upper band with diamonds, crosses and little flowers, and thick arches framing empty spaces. The matte linen thread shows yellowish stains, wear and loose threads that reveal age. I am amazed by the net of openwork and dense cords handmade with bobbins between 1600 and 1640, probably sewn as a border onto another textile in Venice or Genoa.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

It reminds me of a star map photographed against the night. The black background makes the whitish constellation of threads shine, with dark voids like sky between stars. On top I see a dense band of diamonds, ovals and flowers that looks like an orderly Milky Way, separated by a horizontal line from the lower area. Below, three horseshoe arches hold branched triangular points like comets. This delicate insertion, handmade four centuries ago, makes me think of infinite patience to trace light with threads.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a crown of giant teeth made of white spiderweb. There are three big peaks hanging at the bottom, each with little points and a straight little tail at the tip, like leaves or mountains. On top there are many little flowers, little crosses and diamonds with black holes in between, all quite tight but with little openings. It looks very old, with yellowish spots and loose little threads on the sides. I imagine someone made it by hand a very long time ago, moving threads with great patience to decorate clothing.

What color is the plain background on which the whitish fragment is photographed?

    HintPista

It is a dark color that makes every hole and relief of the light thread stand out.

  3. #3

In the dense upper band, what small geometric shapes repeat among the flowers, similar to diamonds?
