Bobbin lace (needle lace, reticella design)
What you would seeLo que verías
A long, narrow horizontal textile strip is shown flat against a uniform matte black background. The lace, in bone white and pale cream, occupies the upper and middle parts of the image, leaving dark space above and below. Along the top runs a dense, slightly wavy woven band with a tiny edge of small arch-shaped peaks. From that band hang three large pointed triangular motifs, almost like inverted hearts, placed at the left, center, and right, though they are not completely identical. Each point is bordered by small looped teeth and contains oval shapes, crossings, and a lower finish with short fringes. Between and beside those motifs hang many long, straight threads like loose fringe; some are grouped together, others are separated, twisted, or frayed at the ends. The light is frontal and soft, without strong shadows, revealing the fibrous, somewhat rough texture of the threads and the irregularity of handwork. Small asymmetries, differing tensions, and wear from age are visible. No scale is given, but the piece feels delicate and light, made to be seen up close as an ornamental edging.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the horizontal band from end to end, then drop your gaze to the three triangular points. Compare them closely: the differences between them change the piece from a mechanical repeat into evidence of handwork. Finally, notice the loose fringe and the frayed ends, where ornament and wear coexist.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this piece is titled Lace Edging of Points and Fringe, is by an unknown maker, and dates from 1550–99. It is attributed to Genoa, Italy, and belongs to the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, which records it as a gift of J. H. Wade. The record classifies it as lace and mentions bobbin lace, needle lace, and reticella design. In safe general terms, Italy was an important center for Renaissance lace, and reticella is associated with geometric motifs built over a net-like ground. It is not known who made it, what garment or object it was used for, or its exact size.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual observation: from a distance the three triangular points look like a regular repeat, but up close none is exactly like the others in its inner ovals, crossing threads, or lower tip.

I pause at what time has made visible: those long hanging threads, some twisted, some frayed at the tips, others still taut. The wavy upper band holds three triangular points that are not identical, and that tells me of hands, not a machine. I see ovals, crosses and toothed eyelets made with patience. It is a delicate strip, bone white against a dark background, meant to be seen up close to notice every irregularity. Its fragility concerns me.

When I look at this edging I think of constellations: three large points like three main stars aligned over a matte black background that looks like a night sky. Between them hang long straight fringes like meteor showers, some grouped and others loose. The upper band is the horizon. I like that nothing is perfect, that each oval and each cross has a slight difference, as if the artisanal universe also had its own variations.

It looks like an upside-down crown or a smile with three big teeth and lots of little hairs hanging down. It is white like cream and placed on something black to make it shine more. I like counting the fringes and seeing that some are crooked and messy. The three points have little holes with pretty shapes like eyes and crosses. It looks soft but also looks old and we need to take great care of it so it does not break.
