linen: bobbin lace

What you would seeLo que verías

Against a deep, uniform black background lies a horizontal rectangular fragment of lace in pale ivory, almost beige, with very soft ochre signs of age. The upper section is a narrow, dense band of bobbin lace that forms the main body; its weave combines opaque, tightly worked areas with openwork that lets the dark background show through, creating small ovals, diamonds and eyelets. The pattern repeats vaguely vegetal or spiral-like motifs, symmetrical and separated by bridges of interlaced thread. The lower edge of this band is straight and more compact, like a woven heading. From it hangs an abundant fringe of long, loose, fine linen threads in the same light tone. The fringe falls vertically with gentle waviness, uneven in length and spaced apart, some threads slightly tangled or bent, giving an ethereal texture and sense of movement. Light emphasizes the raised relief of the braided lace against the soft, frayed quality of the fringe. At the left end the lace appears somewhat frayed and incomplete, revealing the fragility of the old textile and its handmade character.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the upper band from left to right to see the interplay of dense and open areas. Then lower your gaze to the fringe and notice how its irregular fall and lightness contrast with the contained geometry of the lace above.

ContextContexto

This is a fragment of bobbin lace made of linen, crafted in Italy during the 1600s by an unknown maker, held in the Textiles collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to source information, although made of linen, its format — an insertion finished with a fringe — is like that of contemporary laces made with gold, silver and colored silk threads. Its specific original use is not documented, but it probably served as trim for fashionable clothing or prestigious household textiles, highly valued in the Baroque period.

Curious detailDato curioso

Bobbin lace is made by braiding and crossing threads wound on bobbins over a pillow without a backing fabric, and although this example is linen, its structure copies far more expensive metallic passementerie models.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a restorer I focus on the pale ivory linen with soft ochre signs of aging and how light reveals the contrast between the dense upper band and the openwork that lets the black background show through. I notice the stylized vegetal motifs, the repeated rhombuses and eyelets, and the compact edge from which long wavy fringes fall. I am drawn to the incomplete frayed left end, a trace of time on this seventeenth-century baroque fragment.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I see this lace as a constellation against a night sky. The deep uniform black background makes the ivory band shine like stars joined by threads. The openwork with ovals and rhombuses reminds me of star charts, points of light between dense areas. The vertical fringes look like a frozen meteor shower. It is an Italian seventeenth-century fragment in linen, similar to those made with gold and silver threads, and it invites close looking as if observing the heavens.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This lace looks like a tiny curtain for fairies. On top there is a thick part with little holes shaped like rhombuses and spirals that let the black background show, and below hang lots of long ivory fringes that move like hair. Some are tangled and others hang straight. I like to count the fringes and see how light makes shadows. One side is frayed as if someone cut it. It is old, from seventeenth-century Italy, and I feel it is a delicate treasure to touch very carefully.
