plain weave: linen
What you would seeLo que verías
The piece is a very wide, low rectangular cloth, photographed horizontally against a plain black background that sets off its irregular outline. It fills nearly the entire frame. Its dominant color is a muted bone white, shading into beige, yellowish, and grayish patches from age stains. The edges are not perfectly straight: the top has short, sparse fringing, the bottom and sides are slightly frayed, and the corners look softly rounded or folded. The surface, plain-woven linen, shows a fine, regular grid of horizontal and vertical threads, giving it a faintly rough texture. Gentle folds and diagonal wrinkles, especially toward the ends, cast soft shadows and make the cloth look flexible and worn rather than stiff. Looked at slowly, small but telling damage appears: left of center, a dark, almost black vertical tear shaped like a frayed slit, with a smaller mark below it; other tiny black holes are scattered near the lower edge and in the right third. There are also minute specks, diffuse stains, and uneven light across the surface. There are no drawings, inscriptions, or figures: the visual power lies in the material itself, its age, and its fragility.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the empty, almost unmarked surface, then move slowly toward the small tears and stains. Notice how the dark vertical slit on the left interrupts the pale fabric and changes the piece from a plain cloth into a record of touch, time, and decay.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this work, titled Mummy Linen, is an Egyptian textile from the New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, dated 1540–1296 BCE and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its maker is unknown, and it is woven in linen using a plain weave. Linen was the principal textile fiber in ancient Egypt, and in funerary settings it was used for mummy bandages and wrappings. In this case, however, the source does not give an exact provenance or identify the person it belonged to. It probably formed part of a burial or mummification process, but its specific function is not known for certain.

Curious detailDato curioso
Ancient Egyptian linen was made from flax, a plant whose long stems yield fine, strong fibers; the quality of the cloth could range from coarse everyday fabric to gauze so fine it was almost transparent.

I pause on what few people notice: the plain weave, fine and regular, with horizontal and vertical threads still holding together. I see the muted bone white turning beige and yellowish with time, and the edges with sparse fringe on top and fraying below. That dark vertical tear to the left of center and the tiny black holes speak of fragility and centuries of folding. There are no drawings to distract, just material asking for care, low light and hands that do not touch.

This linen reminds me of the night sky photographed in negative. Against the black background of the frame, the pale cloth looks like a horizontal milky way, with tiny specks and diffuse stains like faint stars. The diagonal wrinkles are light waves, soft shadows that add depth. That dark slit to the left of center is like a small eclipse interrupting the weave. With no inscriptions or figures, the textile becomes a map of time, where each fray and grayish tone tells centuries in silence.

It looks like a very very old giant bedsheet, all wrinkly with little hairs on the edges. It is white but not bright white, more like cookie color with little stains. If you touched it it would break, because it has little black holes and a long tear like a little open mouth on the left. It has no drawings or letters, just little lines from the threads crossing. I imagine they folded it many times and that is why it has diagonal lines that look like paths for tiny ants.

Look closely at the cloth: what is its overall color and what shape does the most visible tear near the center have?
HintPista
Find the pale tone covering most of the surface, then look left of center for a dark elongated line.
#2
Look at the textile edges: how do they look on top and what texture covers the whole surface?
HintPista
Trace the outline against the black background, then look closer to see the crossing threads forming very tiny squares.
#3
The cloth has no drawings, but it does have marks of time: what other dark details are scattered near the lower edge and on the right third?
HintPista
Look for tiny black dots like pinpricks, not in the center but lower down and toward the right.
