What you would seeLo que verías
Against a flat matte black background lies an L-shaped fragment of cloth in pale ivory turning to toasted beige at the edges. The piece looks like an elongated bandage with a clearly visible plain weave: uneven vertical and horizontal linen threads create a loose, slightly translucent, gauze-like texture. On the right side the edge retains a short, frayed fringe, indicating it was cut or torn; the top and bottom selvedges are irregular, unraveling, with caramel-colored staining from oxidation or ancient resin. In the lower left there is a large diamond-shaped hole with a dark brown halo suggesting burning or chemical degradation; the surrounding fabric is darker and more brittle. Soft wrinkles, gentle folds and tiny reddish and dark speckles are scattered across the surface. Even, frontal museum lighting reveals every thread, knot and wrinkle, emphasizing the fragility of this millennia-old textile, modest in scale, probably about the length of an outstretched forearm.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First trace the L-shaped outline and the fringe on the right to understand it was a long wrapping band. Then focus on the large hole with its scorched rim: its color and texture shift the reading from simple cloth to a funerary object marked by age and decay.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is mummy linen dated to 1540–1296 BCE, from Egypt's New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty (1540–1069 BCE). The technique is plain weave linen and the maker is unknown, as is typical for funerary textiles of this period. Linen was the primary material for wrapping mummified bodies due to its ritual purity and availability in the Nile Valley. No information is provided about exact provenance, archaeological context, or the associated mummy, so it is not known to whom it belonged or where it was found.

Curious detailDato curioso
In ancient Egypt, linen used for mummies was often repurposed from household clothing and bedding, which is why many wrappings preserve hems and fringes like the one visible on the right side of this fragment.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I look at this linen bandage and see fragility in every thread. The plain weave of vertical and horizontal yarns of uneven thickness creates a thick, slightly translucent gauze in an ivory tone that turns toasted beige at the edges. My attention is caught by the frayed fringe on the right, the caramel colored stains and that large diamond shaped hole with a dark brown halo at the lower left, which speaks of burning or chemical degradation and of wrinkles that demand extreme care.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
Used to gazing into the black void of space, I see this matte black background as a night sky where a constellation of linen floats. This irregular L shaped bandage looks like a pale ivory nebula, with filaments formed by its vertical and horizontal threads. I notice its edge with a frayed fringe like an eroded stellar border, and that diamond shaped hole at the lower left is like a dark hole surrounded by a brown halo, a mark of ancient time that we study as if it were old light.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This little cloth looks like the gauze they put on me when I scrape my knee but very very old and with little holes. It is light ivory like cream and at the edges it looks toasted beige. If you look closely you can see little threads crossing like a net. It has a frayed fringe on the right and at the lower left there is a big diamond shaped hole with a dark brown stain around it, as if it had been burned. It is wrinkly and spotty and shines under the museum light.
