What you would seeLo que verías
Horizontal black-and-white etching with engraving showing the ruins of the Castrense Amphitheatre in Rome. In the foreground, centered and slightly low, the curved amphitheatre displays a row of round arches supported by Corinthian columns and pilasters; the arches, built in brick and travertine, are partly walled up, weathered and overgrown with vegetation. Above them rises a thick, ruined wall capped with dense shrubs, ivy and grasses along its edge. In the middle ground stands the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, identifiable by its triangular pediment topped with a cross and, taller behind it, a medieval bell tower of several stories with paired arched windows and a pyramidal roof crowned by a cross. To the left are remains of the Aurelian Walls, while to the right tall trees with light, feathery foliage frame the scene. At the bottom, a rough open ground holds tiny human figures — travelers on foot and on horseback — that give a sense of monumental scale. Strong chiaroscuro is created through dense, cross-hatched lines, and capital letters A, B, C, D, E are placed over architectural features for reference. The sky is rendered with fine horizontal strokes and soft, billowing clouds, and a lengthy Italian caption runs along the lower margin.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the curved arcade in the lower center and move upward through the tangle of plants on the wall to the vertical bell tower against the sky. Then look for the tiny human and horse figures below: their small size reveals the enormity of the ruins. Finally notice the labeled letters A through E and the caption that turn a landscape into an architectural diagram.
ContextContexto
This print is by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, the Venetian printmaker and architect active in mid-18th-century Rome, as recorded by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It depicts the Castrense Amphitheatre, a Roman amphitheatre from the 3rd century AD, traditionally associated with the reigns of Trajan or Elagabalus and later incorporated by Emperor Aurelian into the Aurelian Walls for defense. The caption at the bottom identifies the arches of the first order, remains of the second order, the modern wall, the city walls and the basilica. Piranesi merged archaeological documentation with dramatic, picturesque effects, producing prints that educated antiquarians and Grand Tour travelers about ancient Rome.

Curious detailDato curioso
Piranesi often surveyed ruins on site with precise measurements, and his etchings became essential visual records of Roman monuments long before photography; the Castrense Amphitheatre can still be seen today beside the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, embedded in the ancient city wall.

I focus on the printmaking craft, with dense cross-hatching that builds deep shadows over eroded brick and travertine. I notice how vegetation —scrub, ivy and grasses— clings to cornices and crumbling walls, a sign of damp and abandonment that I would stabilize without erasing its history. The capital letters from A to E and the Italian legend at the bottom act as a didactic map of the first and second order, the modern wall and the city wall, a typical Piranesi device that joins archaeological precision with theatrical drama.

Through my lens I measure scale and light as if they were constellations on paper. The tiny figures on foot and on horseback in the open ground give me the proportion of the amphitheater and of the basilica with its campanile of twin windows. The contrast between deep blacks and pale grays, achieved with horizontal hatching in the sky and fluffy clouds, feels like an engraved eclipse: shadow and brightness calibrated so the eye can gauge distances, heights and the curve of the walled-up arches beneath a vast Roman sky.

It looks like a giant broken castle! The arches are like huge brick doors with plants growing on top as if it were green hair. There are little letters A, B, C, D, E hidden like a treasure hunt game. Down below there are tiny people on foot and on horseback, so small the amphitheater looks enormous. Behind it there is a church with a cross on top and a tall tower with double little windows. I imagine running through the arches and shouting to hear my echo.
